Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The OdysseyAfter only a few days, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has already become one of the biggest cinematic events of 2026. As cerebral and psychologically intense as it is full of supernatural dangers like Sirens and Cyclopes, Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s 3,000-year-old epic is certainly one for the ages. However, there’s a solid collection of similar movies audiences should check out as well.
For those who want to keep the vibes going with movies featuring similar concepts and themes, a list of the very best options can be found below. While I did feel compelled to add some of Nolan’s past films as peak pairings with The Odyssey, I promise it’s only a few.
Whether you’re looking for another Greek adventure filled with intense action or simply another movie that captures the same emotional and psychological struggles, there are plenty of excellent choices to be found. While some share the mythological setting and/or time period, others were chosen due to how well they reflect the themes and messages in Nolan’s latest epic. If you loved Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and are looking for more, here are some solid options for movies that are definitely worth adding to the watchlist.
Troy (2004)
Few films pair more naturally with The Odyssey than Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy, released in 2004 and inspired by Homer’s preceding epic The Iliad.
Petersen’s Troy is an action-packed retelling of the fictional Trojan War and the events before Odysseus’ voyage home to Ithaca, as Agamemnon rallies the armies of Greece to attack the Trojans after Menelaus’ wife Helen, left Sparta to be with Paris of Troy. Also, the movie particularly centers on the clash between Brad Pitt’s Achilles and Eric Bana’s Hector, culminating with Sean Bean’s Odysseus’ plan with the Trojan Horse and the destruction of Troy itself.
While the movie makes some fairly drastic changes in terms of various characters’ fates, Troy is still well worth watching, especially because the movie was nearly directed by Nolan himself. Additionally, the 2004 film offers a far more grounded take on the Greek gods and their influence compared to Homer’s original poem, not unlike what is depicted in The Odyssey.
Clash of Titans (1981/2010)
If Nolan’s new film has you wanting to dive even further into Greek mythology, either or both versions of Clash of the Titans should be a must-watch. Both the beloved 1981 original and the 2010 remake feature all kinds of ancient monsters, vengeful gods, legendary weapons, and major quests.
Likewise, the 1981 film is particularly notable for its use of practical effects and the groundbreaking work of stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen. Similarly, Nolan’s extremely limited use of digital effects and preference for the practical in The Odyssey make the original Clash of the Titans feel like a natural companion film. However, the 2010 remake is a fun watch as well, featuring an impressive cast with Sam Worthington as Perseus, Liam Neeson as Zeus, Ralph Fiennes as Hades, and more.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
A clever and surprising adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, the Coen Brothers’ comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou? reimagines the original epic in the 1930s’ American South. George Clooney plays Ulysses Everett McGill as an intentional parallel to Odysseus, embarking on an absurd journey filled with modern-day stand-ins for the poem’s classic dangers like the Cyclops and Sirens.
Examples include Everett and his fellow prison escapees encountering a one-eyed Bible salesman, as well as a group of seductive women offering whiskey. Likewise, Everett’s entire mission is eventually revealed to be his desire to return home and prevent his wife Penny from remarrying (a clear parallel to Penelope and the suitors of Ithaca).
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003)
I couldn’t pick just one. It’s not hard to argue that Peter Jackson’s entire Lord of the Rings trilogy is a peak cinematic follow-up after watching The Odyssey. Featuring long and hard journeys filled with dangers, monsters, trials, and threats, every obstacle overcome by Frodo Baggins is underscored by his desire to one day return home to the Shire after destroying the One Ring and preventing Sauron’s full return.
The shared themes only persist with many of the trilogy’s other characters as well, like Aragorn and his reclaiming of Gondor as its true king after years of an empty throne and those seeking to claim its power. Overall, both The Odyssey and The Lord of the Rings offer some of the greatest epics (and technical undertakings) ever seen on screen.
Gladiator/Gladiator II (2000/2024)
Ridley Scott’s Gladiator films capture many of the same emotional beats that define Odysseus’ story, particularly when it comes to bonds between fathers and sons, legacy, and themes of reclamation. Russell Crowe’s Maximus spends the first film fighting to reclaim the life taken from him, while Gladiator II expands those themes with Paul Mescal’s Lucius and the next generation confronting Rome’s ongoing corruption and violence.
The Green Knight (2021)
David Lowery’s The Green Knight is inspired by the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, offering a similar approach to Nolan’s The Odyssey. Exploring the ideals of honor, temptations, identity, and the true makings of a hero, Dev Patel’s Sir Gawain encounters several trials, dangers, and moral tests on his quest, just like Odysseus and his quest to return home to Ithaca.
300 (2006)
For those wanting to see even more Greek warrior action, there’s always Zack Snyder’s 300. Like The Odyssey, 300 embraces historical fantasy in its adaptation of the Battle of Thermopylae and the legendary story of the vastly outnumbered 300 Spartans who managed to hold back the armies of Persia for days. Mirroring The Odyssey, Snyder’s 300 also explores how stories can become true legends, becoming immortalized thousands of years later.
Interstellar (2014)
Before The Odyssey, Nolan essentially directed the science-fiction version with Interstellar. In the 2014 movie, long considered to be one of Nolan’s greatest films, Matthew McConaughey’s Cooper leaves Earth to save humanity, only to spend years desperately searching for a way back to his children, becoming a victim of several cosmic trials and tragic time dilation.
The Dark Knight Rises (2013)
At first glance, Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film may seem like an unusual recommendation, but the parallels are easy to find when you think about it. Bruce Wayne hasn’t been Batman for years by the start of The Dark Knight Rises, and he’s ultimately broken and faced with intense trials before he finally returns to Gotham, reclaiming his true self as Batman and ridding his city of Bane’s influence.
This is not unlike the trials and temptations of Odysseus and his ultimate return to Ithaca, reclaiming his identity and ridding his kingdom of the suitors (the worst of whom is ironically played by current Batman actor Robert Pattinson). Like Batman, Odysseus’ greatest asset was his intelligence and cunning, and he similarly used a disguise in his mission of vengeance in the film’s third act. Both movies present broken heroes who have to be remade.
Oppenheimer (2023)
More than any other film listed, 2023’s Oppenheimer feels like a major must-watch after The Odyssey, particularly due to how incredibly similar their endings are, which couldn’t have been a coincidence on Nolan’s part. Despite having lived thousands of years apart, both Oppenheimer and Odysseus are presented as men who grapple with the dark world-shaking consequences of what they’ve built.
After the Trinity Test, Oppenheimer realizes the atomic bomb has forever altered humanity’s future, while Nolan’s version of The Odyssey sees Odysseus viewing the Trojan Horse as the beginning of the age’s end, a violation of the fragile bonds holding early civilization together. Again, it’s no coincidence that Nolan followed Oppenheimer by adapting Homer’s epic the way he did.
