Disney+ subscribers looking for movies to watch this weekend on the streaming service can check out these three very different films that connect to recent releases. On last weekend’s Disney+ movie recommendations, I explored projects like Stitch! The Movie, Captain Marvel, and Avatar: Fire and Ash, making for a fun three-movie binge for those who are fans of the sci-fi genre.
Right now, only one of those recommendations is trending on the streaming service. At the time of writing, Avatar: Fire and Ash is the most-watched movie on Disney+ in the United States. With that in mind, I have thought about the perfect space opera for subscribers to check out on the streamer this weekend. It will allow them to get fully immersed in a wondrous world.
That said, rest assured that this weekend’s Disney+ movie recommendations are not all from the sci-fi genre like happened last weekend. One of the entries is a superhero movie, and a Marvel one at that, even though it is not part of the MCU movie franchise. This R-rated superhero movie in question connects with a team’s return at the start of July.
With a sci-fi movie and a superhero entry on the list, I decided to finish this trio of recommendations with a fantasy global hit that will soon return in a completely new way. Disney+’s movie library is filled with franchises. For the first weekend of July, I invite you to enjoy some of those.

Moana (2016)
First up on our list is Moana. The animated movie is one of Disney’s most popular. It became a true box office juggernaut, finishing its theatrical run with $643.3 million. Currently, Moana stands as the 7th most-watched movie on Disney+ in the United States. There is a good reason for that, as the time to rewatch or finally give Moana a chance is now.
Disney’s Moana live-action remake will arrive in theaters on July 10, making this weekend the final one to experience the original for the first time if you have not watched it yet. Moana tells the story of a young girl with big dreams who embarks on a daunting mission that sees her take on fantastical creatures, travel the ocean, and interact with Dwayne Johnson’s scene-stealing shape-shifter demigod, Maui.

Deadpool 2 (2018)
July is the month of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That said, before the MCU movie arrives, Marvel Studios had another exciting release in store for fans, the animated X-Men ’97 season 2. After subscribers finish watching the first three episodes of the hit series’ new season, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 2 emerges as the perfect follow-up.
X-Men ’97 season 2 debuts a new take on the X-Force team of mutants from Marvel Comics. That is why the R-rated movie is a must-watch this weekend on the streamer. Deadpool 2 also explored the X-Force in live-action, with a hilarious and surprising use of the mutant team. The film is hilarious with new characters like Josh Brolin’s Cable and Zazie Beetz’s Domino adding a new dimension to the franchise.

Avatar: The Way Of Water (2022)
The final movie on our Disney+ recommendations for the first weekend of July is James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water. The space opera is the perfect companion piece for a sci-fi movie that is currently lighting up streaming charts around the globe. At the time of writing, Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in the franchise, is Disney+’s most-watched movie worldwide, according to FlixPatrol.
Avatar: The Way of Water is its direct predecessor. It introduces many of the elements and characters who play a key role in the movie that is taking over Disney+. The film also cemented the status of the Avatar franchise as a powerhouse with even better storytelling, VFX, and performances than the 2009 original. Disney+ subscribers will be well-served with any of the three movies.
