40 Years Later, Stand By Me Is Still The Best Non-Horror Stephen King Movie (Despite What IMDb Says)

Many adaptations of Stephen King novels have been excellent, and outside the horror genre, Stand by Me is the best. While King is largely known for horror stories, some of the best Stephen King movies have been looser with their genre conventions. The Green Mile and last year’s The Life of Chuck are great examples of this working so well.

Still, King’s horror roots cannot be forgotten. Movies like The Mist continue to perform on streaming, and others like Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining are considered among the greatest horror films ever made, despite King himself having a more mixed opinion on the film.

King adaptations have been everywhere for decades, on television and on the big screen. The prequel series It: Welcome to Derry has been beloved on streaming, and a new adaptation of Carrie, the author’s first published novel, is set to release on Prime Video in October.

With how well horror has been performing in recent years, it makes sense that more King adaptations have continued to be made on a fairly regular basis. The It movies broke box office records, and King’s works have continued to be seen as some of the most important in the genre.

It is also clear that King is a masterful storyteller in all genres. And while many would credit another popular film as the best non-horror adaptation of the author’s work, there are a number of reasons why Stand by Me has remained so important to so many people.

Stand By Me Is A Perfect Stephen King Movie (& Even Better Than The Shawshank Redemption)

Stand by Me is a powerful film, and is King’s best story outside the horror genre. The 1980s Stephen King film, which opened in limited release on August 8th, 1986, begins its story with a grown-up Gordie Lachance discovering that one of his childhood friends has passed. This leads to his reminiscing about a memorable summer they shared in 1959.

The film does not shy away from adult themes, as is quickly shown by the characters and their complex family dynamics. After Ray Brower, a local kid, disappears, the friends venture together along the train tracks to find the body and become local heroes.

This setup feels authentic to the childhood experience. While the Oregon community around them has experienced the dark loss of one of their own, the kids see it as an opportunity for adventure and to elevate their own status.

This unusual contrast is uncomfortably human, and makes the film’s ending, where the kids decide not to take the credit, but instead to submit an anonymous tip, feel especially earned.

Yes, many believe that The Shawshank Redemption is the best Stephen King movie, and arguably among the greatest films of all time. With many powerful scenes in The Shawshank Redemption, and with the film still topping the IMDb chart as the highest-rated movie overall, there is certainly a valid argument.

Still, Shawshank‘s confronting of important themes is done from a more selective lens, and provides a story that will not connect as deeply wiht all ages. Stand by Me delivers just as much emotional resonance, but does it in a universally accessible way: by tapping into the experience of childhood, and adeptly encapsulating all that it entails.

Stand By Me Remains A Timeless Classic

Mature stories about childhood friendships will always have a place in pop culture. While this often ends up moving into genre stories, as has been seen in projects like the aforementioned It and Netflix’s rewatchable hit series Stranger Things, Stand by Me makes it clear that it grounded dramas built around young characters are just as effective.

A lot of this has to do with the fantastic cast that director Rob Reiner assembled. Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell have excellent chemistry, and the ways that they play off of one another feel natural and grounded. The film doesn’t speak down to the experience of childhood, but instead embraces it.

This makes the story accessible for young audiences, who can see themselves in the characters, as well as to older ones, who view the story through a grounded sense of nostalgia. Things feel different as a kid, and the way the movie approaches that, in the friends embarking excitedly on their dark mission, extends to the audience.

Stand by Me is beloved even 40 years after its release, and that makes sense. It feels especially human in a way that does not sacrifice realism for genre. It is funny at times, soulful and sad at others.

The powerful relatability of the characters, even firmly set in their own time period of the 1950s, when the film’s story mostly takes place, is grounded enough to extend to all generations.

The film’s end is not exclusively joyful; Gordie outlines the paths his friends have gone on after they’ve drifted apart, and some have found success while others have found tragedy. He reflects on how none of his friendships since have felt the same way, ending the film on a powerfully bittersweet note.

Stand By Me Led To Another Great Stephen King Adaptation

The late Rob Reiner made many stunning movies over the course of his career other than Stand by Me, including When Harry Met Sally… and The Princess Bride. However, the filmmaker also made another fantastic Stephen King adaptation when he directed the 1990 film Misery.

Markedly different from Stand by Me, Misery is a fantastic vehicle for Kathy Bates, who won an Academy Award for her terrifying portrayal of Annie Wilkes, an obsessive fan of the film’s author protagonist, Paul Sheldon. The story’s slow unfolding of her derangement is powerful and makes Misery a must-see to this day.

Reiner’s work with Stephen King novels is smart and layered. His films draw well from the source material, with many crediting them as among the strongest and most faithful of all adaptations of King’s writing.

With that said, even the differences between those two films show how wide the thematic canon of King’s work really is. More adaptations of his novels and stories will certainly continue to be successful in the years ahead, but it is difficult to imagine any of those films quite living up to the enduring excellence of Stand by Me.
