Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian & Grogu
Now playing in theaters, The Mandalorian & Grogu features several cool action sequences and reveals connecting to the greater Star Wars galaxy and lore. However, one of the best happens in the movie’s very first act and is directly tied to 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back.
Although the new Star Wars movie largely focuses on Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and his adopted son’s latest adventure during the New Republic Era, The Mandalorian & Grogu’s opening sequence is undoubtedly a massive love letter to The Empire Strikes Back and the iconic Battle of Hoth, one of the greatest conflicts in the entire franchise.
Amid all the cool action sequences with Din Djarin and his son taking on an entire Imperial Remnant holdout, The Mandalorian & Grogu manages to answer a question many Star Wars fans have had for just over four decades, thanks to a very cool reveal that’s made for the first time on-screen in the galaxy far, far away.
The Mandalorian & Grogu Gives Din Djarin His Own “Battle of Hoth”
The Mandalorian & Grogu wastes zero time throwing Din Djarin directly into a major conflict with the bounty hunter now working for the New Republic to track down Imperial warlords. Infiltrating an Imperial Remnant holdout on an icy world that may or may not be Hoth (the planet is never named), the new Star Wars movie gives Djarin his own personal “Battle of Hoth” regardless.
Djarin is pursuing Commander Barro, an Imperial warlord who originally debuted in The Mandalorian season 3 with the Imperial Shadow Council. Taking on several Imperial snowtroopers, Din Djarin and Grogu also sabotage three Imperial AT-AT walkers before taking out Barro himself. Without a doubt, this opening battle is one of the movie’s best action sequences, a truly epic way to give Din Djarin and Grogu their big-screen debut in the Star Wars franchise.
Although seeing AT-ATs actively deployed again in live-action is exciting enough, the new Star Wars movie goes even further by showing audiences elements shared with the Battle of Hoth in much greater detail. To that end, the biggest example is the various Imperial snowtroopers in Commander Barro’s service and their classic helmets.
We Now Know What Snowtrooper Helmets Look Like Underneath The Cloth
Snowtrooper armor is easily one of the coolest and one of the more unique Imperial designs in the Star Wars franchise. Equipped for extreme cold-weather combat, snowtroopers have more insulated armor, kama skirts, backpacks, and attached cloth hoods covering the bottom half of their helmets. As such, many have long wondered what a full snowtrooper helmet looks like beneath the fabric, something The Mandalorian & Grogu has finally answered on-screen.
During several interior scenes inside the Imperial Remnant base and inside one of the AT-AT walkers itself (also a cool reveal), a few of the Imperial Remnant snowtroopers can briefly be seen without their thermal hoods attached. The reveal shows that the helmet actually extends more than previously assumed, with a surprisingly all-black rebreather design. The movie even shows one trooper quickly attaching the thermal hood onto his helmet while preparing for battle inside an AT-AT, showing how the hood easily comes on and off.
Combined with an impressive AT-AT interior fight sequence once Djarin makes his way inside to bring the walker down, it’s pretty cool that The Mandalorian & Grogu has added some great new texture and detail to the original Battle of Hoth, 46 years after the release of The Empire Strikes Back.
The Mandalorian & Grogu is now playing in theaters from Lucasfilm.
