Chris Pratt’s space sci-fi film is preparing to blast off and land on Netflix.
After breaking out as the lovable goof Andy Dwyer on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation (2009–2015), Pratt has gone on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster stars, rocketing to fame as Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (2014–2023), and bringing back dinosaurs as Owen Grady in the Jurassic World trilogy (2015–2022). Along the way, he also led action-packed hits like The Magnificent Seven (2016) and The Tomorrow War (2021), but now, another one of Pratt’s sci-fi films is preparing to land on streaming.
A decade after debuting in theaters, Passengers officially releases on Netflix in just two weeks. Directed by Morten Tyldum, the sci-fi film stars Chris Pratt alongside Jennifer Lawrence as two passengers aboard an interstellar spacecraft who are awakened from suspended hibernation 90 years early into their 120-year journey carrying thousands of people to a distant colony.
Now, following its theatrical release in 2016, Passengers is officially coming to Netflix on June 1. The movie is currently streaming on STARZ and is also available to rent or buy on Prime Video and other platforms from only $3.99.
Other than Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence in the lead roles, the cast also includes Michael Sheen, Laurence Fishburne, Andy Garcia, Julee Cerda, and Aurora Perrineau. The film also features the voices of Emma Clarke, Chris Edgerly, Matt Corboy, Fred Melamed, and Jon Spaihts, who also wrote the script.
Passengers received mixed reviews, resulting in a lowly 30% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics praising Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence’s strong on-screen chemistry, but also claiming that their pairing can’t save the film’s fundamentally flawed story.
Producer Neal Moritz famously described Passengers as “Titanic meets Gravity” because it combines a massive doomed vessel with a struggle for survival in deep space.
The movie was received much better by audiences, indicated by its 63% score from that group, and grossed $303.1 million at the box office, which could be a success depending on its budget, reported to be in the range of $110–150 million. Passengers went on to receive two Oscar nominations for Best Original Score and Best Production Design at the 89th Academy Awards.
A decade after its debut, Passengers remains deeply controversial, especially due to its ending and the debate surrounding the scientific accuracy of its portrayal of space. However, with it coming to Netflix in just two weeks, audiences can either reappraise Passengers or watch it for the first time and form their own opinions.
