Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey silences the naysayers after a long, arduous voyage of controversies.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker tackles Homer’s epic poem, which is notorious for being difficult to adapt. Unfortunately, the hurdles didn’t end there, as the first look at The Odyssey sparked skepticism and backlash over creative choices, such as a lack of Greek representation and the use of contemporary English dialogue. With the fantasy epic now in theaters, the audience verdict is officially out.
With over 1000 verified ratings so far, The Odyssey officially breaks Nolan’s audience score record of 97%, and the average rating is 4.80 out of 5 stars. The previous record-holder was a three-way tie between Memento, Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight, at 94%. In addition, reviews of The Odyssey were critically acclaimed and earned Nolan’s overall highest-rated movie with a near-perfect 96% critics’ score.

Both critics and audiences agree that Nolan’s fantasy epic is a cinematic triumph, particularly praising the visual grandeur and set pieces of the Greek story, the horror-like elements of the mythology, and powerful performances, including Matt Damon’s Odysseus and Anne Hathaway’s Penelope. Even with the dense story and a few narrative changes, the Oscar-winning filmmaker elevates the epic tale with the traumatic consequences of the Trojan War.
The official audience score comes after lots of skepticism and controversy over Nolan’s creative liberties. Some dissenters expressed that the adaptation lacked Greek representation and historical accuracy, given that the story originated during Ancient Greece. One of the biggest objections was the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, and right-wing circles accused the adaptation of being “woke.”
Since then, Nolan has responded to the many controversies, telling The Telegraph: “Comes with the territory… But look, these conversations that happen before people see the film – they’re always irrelevant, because no one having them knows what the film actually is yet.” Additionally, he told the Los Angeles Times that he used modern English since he wanted a “language that has emotional not intellectual meaning to people.”
Despite boycott attempts, Nolan’s risky choices paid off. Online discussions highlight the technical achievements and visual mastery, including Agamemnon’s aura farming, the shocking Athena reveal, Circe’s horror-filled sequence, the sacking of Troy, and The Odyssey‘s action-packed third act. In fact, it’s already becoming a strong award contender and a frontrunner for Best Picture and other technical categories.
While there were concerns of a review-bomb campaign, the ovations drowned out the wails. In fact, the overall audience score is 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, so any review-bombing attempts were unsuccessful. In 2019, the website introduced the verified-rating system as a roadblock to manipulating the audience score. Reviews get designated as verified if the purchase of a ticket is confirmed.
The hype and near-universal approval are already boosting the box office potential. The Odyssey set the best previews in 2026 with $17.6 million, which hints at a record-breaking weekend debut. The adaptation will likely make around $85–100 million domestically and over $200 million worldwide, which could become Nolan’s biggest opening for a non-superhero movie. In particular, The Odyssey sparked high demand for IMAX 70 mm viewing, which is available in 41 theaters worldwide.
The fantasy epic follows Odysseus (Damon), who undergoes a long, difficult trek to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Meanwhile, Penelope (Hathaway) attempts to delay her suitors, while their son Telemachus (Tom Holland) searches for answers about his father’s status. Nolan wrote the script and served as executive producer with his spouse, Emma Thomas.
In addition to Damon, Hathaway, and Holland, The Odyssey‘s star-studded cast includes John Leguizamo, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Samantha Morton, Benny Safdie, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, and Corey Hawkins.
The Odyssey is now playing in theaters.
