Game of Thrones‘ star Emilie Clarke is leaving the Targaryen name behind.
The Game of Thrones universe is adapted from the critically acclaimed novel series written by George R.R. Martin, which has multiple TV series, a stage production, and a new upcoming theatrical movie. The flagship adaptation, which ran for eight years across eight seasons, is widely recognized as one of the most significant and highest-rated TV series in history. Big-budget, cinematic television series were born thanks to the cultural phenomenon.
In an interview with Virgin Radio, one of the major Game of Thrones stars, Clarke, known for portraying Daenerys Targaryen throughout the eight seasons, opened up about becoming more than just one iconic role and leaving behind what became a major cultural phenomenon worldwide.
““I think I went through a phase trying to be known for more than just ‘Game of Thrones’ … which is natural … But now I’m just like … It was great … [I’ll] always be that dragon girl, and maybe that’s okay.”
There are many examples of actors who have played one specific role and have found it hard to shake it away. Daniel Radcliffe is forever known for his portrayal of the boy wizard Harry Potter in the legendary movies. Rowan Atkinson is known worldwide for the beloved comedic performance as Mr. Bean, as well as Macaulay Culkin, who is remembered for the classic and biggest Christmas movie in the world, Home Alone.
Game of Thrones traces Daenerys’ evolution from a powerless and abused exile into a queen who obliterates anything in her path. Her fall from Grace is often cited as one of the worst character arcs in modern times and has become a divisive topic around the world.
Her iconic ability to hatch three dragon eggs and command those dragons became a major part to play in the overall series, making Clarke’s character a fan-favorite while also being incredibly vital to the story.
Clarke is known for other roles, including Ponies, Secret Invasion, Terminator Genisys, Me Before You, and Solo: A Star Wars Story. The actress reportedly has five upcoming projects, including Next Life, When Darkness Loves Us, The Amazing Maurice – The Waters of Life, Criminal, and An Ideal Wife.
Her latest role in Ponies is her highest-rated series so far on Rotten Tomatoes with a near-perfect rating of 97%, even beating Game of Thrones at 89%.
Game of Thrones is available to watch on HBO.
