The newest era in the DC universe officially begins this Friday. Since Superman released in 2025, all eyes have been on DC and James Gunn’s new direction for their cinematic universe. Their first film, focused on their most iconic hero, turned out to be a major critical and box office hit, followed by a beloved new season of the hit series Peacemaker.
Of course, the biggest question that came from fans following Gunn’s latest film was what to expect in the years ahead. Gunn has already been clear that not every film in the DCU will be similar in tone to 2025’s Superman. He revealed that his vision for the cinematic universe was for each film and show to have their own genre and tone that matches the story they’re trying to tell.
With the DC Universe now officially a year old, their biggest era is officially set to begin as three new projects are expected to hit big and small screens soon. Each is widely different in storytelling goals, as shown by their trailers. Plus, they will be the first projects in the DCU not headed by James Gunn himself. However, leading the charge is a much-anticipated blockbuster that has gotten fans hyped since it was announced: Supergirl.
The Next Era For DC Officially Begins With Supergirl This Friday
Beginning this Friday, the latest era for DC will begin as Supergirl finally releases in theaters. This will be the first DC film with a drastic tonal shift from previous DCU projects as it takes on the fantasy genre for a tale of revenge. It’s primarily based on the acclaimed limited series Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, which has become widely-regarded as Supergirl’s best story.
Based on early first reactions to the film, Supergirl is looking to be another hit for DC as critics have praised Milly Alcock for her role as the heroine, as well as the film’s tight emotional core. However, what’s important about this film is that it’s the first in the DCU to put James Gunn’s vision to the test.
Supergirl is the first film in the DCU not to feature James Gunn as the director or showrunner. Instead, Craig Gillespie will take the reins, ushering in DC’s newest era of a hub for unique stories in a shared universe. Supergirl has a lot to prove, and Friday will be the day that fans will get to see what the DCU truly has to offer.
Lanterns And Clayface Are Perfect Follow-Ups For The DCU’s 2026 Lineup
Of course, Supergirl isn’t the only film coming from DC Studios this year. Lanterns and Clayface will be continuing this new era of DC with their own takes on classic DC characters.
Lanterns, which will be headed by showrunner Chris Mundy, is a mystery thriller featuring Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a murder in a small town. While reception to the first trailer was heavily mixed, the latest preview of this series has turned this HBO series into a must-watch for many fans as it blends Green Lantern lore with a True Detective tone.
Meanwhile, DC will be turning to horror in October with Clayface. Co-written by Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins, the movie is set to look at the origins of Clayface through a body horror lense..
Clayface’s horrific poster and nailbiting trailer have made it one of the most anticipated projects from DC Studios. In fact, it’s the perfect capper to a massive year for DC as the studio plays with different genres to make their universe feel different from Marvel’s. It’s the beginning of a new era for DC that could make it the next great franchise, and it officially starts this weekend with Supergirl.
