A lot happens in Dutton Ranch episode 8, “Whiskey Limits,” as Beth and Rip find themselves at another crossroad. It’s baffling to think that the Paramount+ series only has one episode left before wrapping up its successful debut year. Taylor Sheridan’s best Yellowstone season 6 replacement has been a major hit, posting the biggest opening viewership for the streaming giant. Because of that, it wasn’t surprising when Dutton Ranch was renewed for season 2 before its first nine episodes even ended airing.
Before getting to the long-term future of the series, however, Dutton Ranch still has to close its current run, which has been solid in terms of storytelling, for the most part. Beth and Rip’s new life in Texas has been compelling, as they face adversities that they have never encountered before. Meanwhile, the rest of the new cast, spearheaded by Annette Bening’s Beulah Jackson and Ed Harris’s Everett McKinney, have been interesting.
Dutton Ranch episode 8 tackles a lot of stories — at times, it feels too crammed. It deals with the aftermath of Beulah’s heart attack from 10 Petals’ 190th anniversary celebration, Carter’s long-gestating issues, and the brewing crisis in Beth and Rip’s new place of employment. In the end, Dutton Ranch episode 8 ends with a few major revelations that clearly set up the upcoming finale, and likely even beyond. How much the final hour of the show’s current run will be able to address remains uncertain, but they pose some interesting scenarios.
Carter’s Crisis Gets Worse (But Still For No Clear Reason)
When Dutton Ranch started, it was praised for giving Carter his own storyline, unlike CBS’s Marshals, which continues to struggle with what to do with Tate. Beth and Rip’s adopted son had things going on for him, including an intriguing love connection with Oreana — Beulah’s granddaughter, Rob-Will’s daughter, and 10 Petal’s appointed heir. As the show went on, however, Carter’s story became more intense, but the reason for it and his actions remained murky. Unfortunately, even after his biggest snafu yet. Dutton Ranch still fails to establish where he’s coming from.
Following the scene he caused at 10 Petal’s party, Carter finally came clean to Beth about quitting school, arguing that he wanted to be a cowboy instead of doing an academic route. Somehow, despite everything he has done, she allowed him to get his way, arranging for him to work with Rip at 10 Petal. It turns out, that wasn’t what he truly wanted. By the end of “Whiskey Limits”, Carter has fought Rip arrogantly and argued with Beth more vulnerably. He reaches out to Sheriff Wade in Dwight’s old hangout, declaring that he wants a job with him at the Sheriff’s office. Whether he’s actually committed to this new endeavor is unclear.
Dutton Ranch’s True Villain Is Officially Born
On the heels of Beulah’s heart attack, there was a moment in Dutton Ranch episode 8 when it might actually be possible that she would die. After all, Sheridan had a similar twist in Landman. That said, she eventually survived the ordeal and had a talk with her sons, Rob-Will and Joaquin about her surprise decision during the 10 Petal party. She stuck by her choice and forced them to work together for the company. Both were understandably unwilling, but they walked away from the conversation with the sense that they would cooperate.
That was until Joaquin showed up at Sheriff Wade’s office to hand over the gun that was used to kill Wesley. Unfortunately for him, Rio Paloma’s chief law enforcer wouldn’t do anything about it unless he could also produce the body for a solid case. All of these led to a point of no return for Joaquin. In his final Dutton Ranch episode 8 scene, he calls his dad, Mariano Reyes. His existence was first established Dutton Ranch episode 3, where he and Beulah had a brief but clearly important phone call. Subsequent episodes revealed more about the character’s past and ties to Annette Bening’s character, but it’s still unclear where he is now.
Considering Joaquin’s frustrations over his mom’s treatment of him, calling his father, potentially for help, could be the start of an all-out war between him and the people at 10 Petal. Considering everything he’s done for the company, it’s difficult not to sympathize with Joaquin. Obviously, there are shades of Jamie Dutton from Yellowstone in him, but this one seems a more straightforward scenario — unless he also did something horrible to his brother, as Beth’s adopted brother did to her. Amid all of this, Beth and Rip are caught in the middle, considering their investment in 10 Petal.
Beth & Rip Find Themselves At The Crossroads At 10 Petal
While both Carter and Joaquin’s respective twists are great, Dutton Ranch episode 8’s biggest reveal takes place during the final moments of the hour. Just before season 1 ends, the truth about 10 Petal finally comes out, as Austin shares the truth about the business. Apparently, Beulah’s operation relies on smuggling cattle across the border, which involves falsifying documents and endangering the state’s whole industry. Zachariah doesn’t take time to put two and two together, blaming 10 Petals’ corrupt practices for the foot and mouth disease that wiped out Beth and Rip’s herd earlier in the season.
Dutton Ranch’s Future Is Uncertain After Paramount+’s Season 2 Decision
Paramount+ has officially sealed the fate of Dutton Ranch season 2, but its future remains uncertain regarding the specific details about the show.
Before all this revelation, it seemed like the Dutton Ranch couple had developed genuine respect for Beulah and were willing to work hard to keep 10 Petals up and running. Obviously, this all changes that, especially since their illegal activities were what led to the failure of their starting business in the first place. Beyond that, it’s safe to say that they aren’t keen on being involved in this kind of operation. While they weren’t new to these kinds of things, the end of Yellowstone marked a new beginning for them, where they no longer sought power and influence more than they wanted peace and freedom.
With two days left before the next batch comes in, Dutton Ranch episode 8 leaves with Beth and RIp looking totally clueless about what to do. Beulah may still be in her happy bubble, following Everett’s decision to finally be fully with her, but her eventual return will likely include an intense conversation with Beth and Rip. Considering the title of the Dutton Ranch season 1 finale, however, “El Padrino” might be defined by the arrival of Mariano.
