The Boys is facing a major change.
Prime Video’s satirical take on superheroes became a global phenomenon and has officially concluded with its fifth season. The Boys, starring Antony Starr, Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Jensen Ackles, and more, broke many records during its run, but the divisive series finale set an unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes record and has a disappointing 52% audience rating, the lowest for the franchise so far.
Many longtime fans of the franchise were unhappy with the final season and, more specifically, the final episode of The Boys, calling upon players like showrunner Eric Kripke for failing to deliver what they believed was promised. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Kripke discussed the series finale that divided the internet and his plans for the future of the franchise for spinoffs titled Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico, including his own involvement.
“I am excited to stretch my muscles on a couple other universes. But I’m also gonna remain to oversee stuff that’s coming out through this VCU [Vought Cinematic Universe]. Quality control, be an advisor. My whole thing is I don’t wanna be the day-to-day showrunner, because I made my passion project; I made The Boys. But Vought Rising is Paul Grellong’s passion project. And I never want these things to feel like they’re widgets.
Each one needs to be idiosyncratic and weird and unique to itself and to be somebody’s passion. Just the way that Gen V is completely different from The Boys, which is gonna be completely different from Vought Rising — though they share a certain DNA and tone, they have very different thematic concerns and very different types of characters.”
Kripke’s announcement that he will no longer be a showrunner moving forward could be happy news for many of those disappointed with the final episode of The Boys for the upcoming spinoffs. However, he will remain as part of the franchise but in a lesser role as an advisor. Kripke mentioned Grellong (known for Scorpion and Hawaii Five-0), who will be at the helm of Vought Rising, which is Vought’s origin story as well as the origins of Soldier Boy (played by Ackles).
When asked about loose ends in the series finale, Kripke addressed fan concerns regarding their favorite The Boys characters. Despite reacting to the online discourse claiming it’s a “bummer”, the overall streaming records and character storylines is certainly something that Kripke still stands by.
“We always started and ended with the characters. And I wanted them all to have satisfying journeys and satisfying endpoints and payoffs. That was my main goal, and I think by and large we did that. Obviously, the online discourse has been a bit of a hurricane and a bummer to read. And I’ll admit that I had my spin-out moments.
But Season Five is the biggest season yet, and 39 days in we have 57 million viewers. And you relearn the same lesson you’ve learned a million times, which is the online world is not the actual world. It’s so easy to feel like, “Oh, my God, that’s everything.” But it’s not. It’s a fraction of a single percentage point. And God love them, they can have their opinions, but it’s been a calming process to know that it is not, in fact, the majority opinion.”
The Boys has officially concluded, and despite some negative discourse, it remains a steady performer for Prime Video with even more spinoffs to come. However, it’s unclear whether certain characters, such as Marie Moreau, will get an ending after Gen V was cancelled after two seasons and didn’t get an official conclusion to her character arc. Kripke has vowed to end their stories, but only time will tell.
The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video.
