The lack of a new single-player Fallout game over the last decade or more really has been a difficult thing for longtime fans of the franchise to contend with. That was made even worse by the release of the Prime Video adaptation, which really just drove home how much potential there is for new stories in the same universe.
Though Bethesda are very much aware of all of that, there doesn’t seem to be any game forthcoming any time soon, with new reports suggesting New Vegas developer Obsidian have been given the reins for a new title. In the meantime, though, there is one potential source of hope that keeps rearing its head.
In case you have missed the swirling rumors, a Fallout 3 remake has been put forward as a project by insiders for over a year at this point. There’s no doubt that it’s an absolute prime candidate, and it would be a way of placating the fan base for considerably less effort than producing an entirely new game.
Adding fuel to that fire is the potential of it being shadow dropped at some point, possibly to coincide with the third season of the TV show. Todd Howard has made it clear that his preference moving forward is for a minimal gap between announcement and release, as evidenced by their strategy with Oblivion Remastered.
Over on Reddit, fans have been discussing that potential future, and it’s safe to say there are a lot of opinions at this point.
“I’m excited for new Fallout anything. I am very much a sucker if it’s even partially related to the series. Fallout 3 also has the bonus of being my favorite, so I’ll probably be getting it on day 1 when/if it ever releases,” one comment read.
While another added, “This was the chapter that introduced me to the series. As soon as I’d finished it, I went straight back to the classics. So it certainly holds a special place in my memories. The first time you leave the vault was one of the most impressive gaming experiences I’ve ever had.”
Others were considerably less convinced about the idea, with one saying, “Makes me sad. It feels like Bethesda can’t make games anymore. The only thing keeping them afloat has to be these re-releases, and they can’t even bother to fix the bugs.”
Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot we can do, other than wait to hear from Bethesda themselves, Hopefully the Fallout 3 remake does materialize in the next year or so anyway, if only to improve the mood amongst community members who are purely in it for the games.
