There’s absolutely no doubt that the recent Prime Video adaptation has thrust the Fallout franchise back to the front of the public consciousness. Rightly so, with the show doing a wonderful job of adapting decades of lore into an entirely new medium, while retaining the humor and over-the-top violence that the series is known for.
With all of that good stuff happening, it’s all the more galling that we haven’t had a new entry in the single-player series for over a decade, with that not particularly likely to change any time soon. That said, things are changing, and a major change in attitude could have huge consequences for Fallout.
In case you missed all of the hubbub at the time, long time Xbox head Phil Spencer recently (and quite suddenly) left the company, to be replaced by Asha Sharma. The new leadership has already made a bunch of popular changes, but a new report in The Information suggests they are far from done.
Specifically, Sharma really wants to prioritize several flagship franchises, with Fallout at the top of that list, flanked by The Elder Scrolls and Halo. That further means that she’ll be hoping to avoid heading into the next decade without new entries in the series, and while that’s obviously great for players if it all comes to fruition, there is plenty of opinion out there on the current situation.
Over on Reddit, the community have been sharing their reactions, with one saying, “Foolish that they haven’t done anything to maximize on the shows success. Remaking New Vegas during this past season of the show would’ve done numbers.”
While another added, “It should be a priority. It’s insane they have nothing to show for ES6 and have no work for even a Fallout 3 or NV remaster.”
“It’d be really funny to see them just take the IP away from Bethesda for doing no games for it, despite getting a ton of good press from the TV show,” a third said.
There isn’t a ton of good feeling towards Bethesda from the fan base right now, so it really wouldn’t be surprising to see major franchises farmed out to other studios for remakes or spin-offs.
We’ve already seen what other developers can pull off when given the reins on big franchises, with Obsidian’s Fallout: New Vegas still the high point in the entire series for many. Even if that doesn’t end up happening, let’s just hope we get to play more Fallout games before too long, whatever form they may come in.
