The good thing about the Fallout franchise taking place in a post-nuclear war-torn America is that Bethesda will never really run out of locations for the game to take place in. From states inspired by Los Angeles and San Francisco, Maryland and Virginia, California and Nevada, the Fallout franchise has already taken us across a small portion of the United States, and with Todd Howard confirming that the Bethesda RPG series would also be set in America, it seems as though the setting for the upcoming Fallout 5 has been narrowed down somewhat.
However, that has not stopped fans from taking the franchise global, as we saw with the launch of Fallout: London back in 2024. That being said, a recent fan project has put us back in the grips of a post-apocalyptic America as it seems as though Chicago is the next major setting.
Courtesy of the Fallout Chicago Team, yes, you guessed it, we are heading to Chicago courtesy of the free-to-download mod, Fallout: Chicago. Released back in March, this DLC-sized expansion to the critically acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas will see players solve pre-war mysteries, deal with post-war politics, and tackle the ongoing conflict between The Union Mob and Midwest Brotherhood Factions.
Unveiled in a stunning launch trailer, Fallout: Chicago takes place in a dangerous and fraught land which will see you need to survive a series of dangerous missions. After all, it was only supposed to be a quick side job. With plans for the mod to be expanded greatly over the next few years, it already hosts a number of incredible features, including the first act of the story, three side quests, the ability to deal drugs and run businesses, two brand-new player homes, a new worldspace set in Chicago, and four new Factions.
Players can also look forward to dozens of new weapons and armor, new enemies, one new companion, caravans for hire, dozens of random encounters and battles, a bank to withdraw your earnings, and new vendors and currency. As mentioned, this is the unofficial DLC that we have all been waiting for.
With plans to introduce more quests and interiors, voiced NPCs, two more companions, bounty hunters, business upgrades, bug fixes, and even more random encounters, the future is looking bright for Fallout: Chicago and fans took to YouTube to share their thoughts on the ambitious project.
“So excited for this mod!” One user shared. “Please don’t let it die like the Nuevo Mexico Mod.” Another joked, “Took me a while to realize this was a Fallout game and not just a video of Chicago.”
With stacks of praise coming in already, it is safe to say that Fallout: Chicago is perfect for those looking for an excuse to return to Fallout: New Vegas, and what is better than heaps of brand-new content made available for absolutely free?
