Since its launch back in 2010, Fallout: New Vegas is not only regarded as the best Fallout entry, but has cemented itself as one of the best video games of all time. Set in the Mojave Desert 204 years after a devastating nuclear war, Fallout: New Vegas was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda, and remains fan’s favorite to this day.
Praised for its writing, gameplay, setting, and even its hilarious bugs, New Vegas follows the story of a courier who, after surviving an assassination attempt, becomes caught up in a conflict between various governing factions in the region. With an open-world set in a dusty, dangerous desert, inspiration came from Mad Max, whilst the story saw its writers want to focus on the greed and excess of humans. Overall, it is unsurprising that Fallout: New Vegas remains a classic.
Back in 2010, Fallout: New Vegas was launched on PC, as well as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and it is yet to make its way to new-gen consoles. As such, it is capped at 60fps on all platforms. As such, exceeding the frame rate in the vanilla game does not end well, meaning that players have had to resort to mods over the years to make their experience with the pretty outdated game even better.
However, thanks to one major Xbox update, that no longer has to be the case. The arrival of Xbox’s FPS Boost feature meant that backward compatibility in some of the console’s oldest games would now be able to welcome enhanced visual quality on the Xbox Series X/S. As the official blog post reads, “FPS boost increases the number of frames per second in select games, giving you a smoother visual experience and more immersive gameplay. For TVs that support HDR10, auto HDR brings richer visuals to select games. Past-gen games will pop with brighter colors and contrasts.”
Luckily, Fallout: New Vegas is one such title that can benefit from this FPS Boost feature, and YouTuber Popontop has demonstrated it in action in a video shared to their channel. Released four years ago, yet still capable of being achieved at the time of writing, Popontop said the following: Recently during Xbox’s 20th anniversary stream, Xbox announced a bunch of new backwards compatible games, as well as some enhancements to already backwards compatible games. Today, we are checking out Fallout: New Vegas running at 60fps on the Xbox Series X thanks to the fps boost, and I am seeing just how much of a difference it makes.”
And what a difference it does make. There is no denying that the visuals in Fallout: New Vegas are pretty outdated, and we all remember that yellow haze over the screen, but in terms of performance and how smooth it runs, it has never been better thanks to this backwards compatible FPS boost.
As such, fellow New Vegas fans took to the comments to share their thoughts. “Thank you so much!” One comment read. “I wasn’t aware of the changes they made, this’ll let me enjoy the game so much more now.” Another fan confirmed the faster loading times, sharing, “Yes, it does load a lot faster on an Xbox Series X from what I can see than on Xbox 360 or Playstation Plus. That fast travel was also very fast.”
So, if you have been debating another Fallout: New Vegas playthrough but do not want to deal with the performance of the original release, make sure to check out Xbox’s FPS boost feature and experience the beloved game like never before.
