During one of the most eventful years in the Fantastic Four’s history, a very close character to Doctor Doom comes back from the dead without prior notice. Across the infinite Marvel multiverse, there are many constants that most timelines seem to respect regardless of how wild and different they are. Uncle Ben’s death, Bruce Banner’s gamma accident, the Fantastic Four’s encounter with cosmic rays during their space mission, and Doctor Doom’s facial scarring all lead to roughly the same origin stories.
Doctor Doom is perpetually single as a deliberate consequence of his own psychological barriers. At the heart of Victor von Doom’s isolation lies an all-consuming, monstrous ego, as he genuinely believes that no mortal being is worthy of standing alongside him as an equal partner. Doom’s arrogant detachment is compounded by a deep-seated fear of vulnerability. For the Latverian monarch, staying single is a way to ensure his unbroken focus remains fixed on total control while guaranteeing he never again exposes his closely guarded heart.
Yet, when the right opportunity strikes, Doctor Doom takes the chance to rewrite history and rekindle his teenage love.
Doctor Doom’s First Love Valeria Returns From The Dead
Doomquest #4; Written By Ryan North; Art By Francesco Mobili
Doctor Doom owes his disdain for the world to various reasons. Usually, Victor von Doom blames Reed Richards for his facial injuries, and he hates Mephisto for claiming ownership of his mother’s soul in Hell. Another emotional scar in Doom’s heart is the death of his childhood sweetheart, Valeria, which he considered necessary in order to gain the magical power he so desperately sought. Years after Doom sacrificed her to gain forbidden power, Valeria returns in Doomquest #4.
Doom named Reed and Sue’s daughter Valeria Richards in honor of his old flame.
Ryan North’s Doomquest sees Victor von Doom travel through time to change history. Throughout this story, Doom travels back to 1912 aboard the Titanic, to the start of the Revolutionary War, and most importantly, to his own childhood. It’s here that Doom finds himself facing the opportunity to reshape his own life, avoid his future as a supervillain, and decide not to sacrifice his first love. As Alex Ross’ cover for Doomquest #4 suggests, this version of Doctor Doom may take the high road and gift himself a happy life, if time travel and its secret price allow it.
Valeria’s Resurrection Comes At An Important Crossroads For Doctor Doom
Doctor Doom’s Story May Change Drastically Soon
Doomquest follows a new version of Doctor Doom while Earth-616’s Doom remains dead following the events of One World Under Doom, while a young clone of Victor von Doom participates in Armageddon against his will, and a few months before Robert Downey Jr.’s live-action Doom threatens the whole MCU multiverse in Avengers: Doomsday. While 2026’s Doomquest may not affect Earth-616 continuity directly, it could influence the main Doctor Doom’s inevitable return, his clone’s future, or Doom’s MCU story after Avengers: Secret Wars.
Marvel’s primary Doctor Doom will return sooner or later, and similarly to many previous major Marvel characters who come back from the dead, he might return with significant changes, especially if Marvel Comics synergizes with the MCU. Doom’s future Earth-616 comics could borrow inspiration from Doomquest and change parts of Victor von Doom’s early years, including his tragic romance with Valeria. Perhaps, if things took a different path, Valeria could become a ruthless Latverian ruler alongside Doom and join the Marvel Universe’s gallery of supervillains. Otherwise, she could ensure Doom never crosses the line and remains a mighty anti-hero.
Marvel Is Officially Reviving Doctor Doom’s Best Series Ahead of Avengers: Doomsday
This May will see the launch of the most ambitious Doctor Doom comic of all time, with all the ingredients to become a modern classic.
Even before any official confirmation about Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is revealed, major changes to Doom’s traditional lore are guaranteed for Avengers: Doomsday. In the MCU, Victor von Doom may not have sacrificed Valeria to acquire magical enhancements, and instead he may have married her. Then, Valeria’s tragic death may be part of the reason why the MCU’s Doom starts his multiversal crusade. Whatever Marvel does with Valeria in other universes, her return in Doomquest holds a lot of potential for Doctor Doom’s lore.
How do you think Valeria’s return could change Doctor Doom?
