The Final Fantasy franchise is very much enjoying a renaissance thanks to the return of old games via remakes and remasters. Final Fantasy VII is obviously the big one right now, with the final part of that set to release at some point next year, if all continues as smoothly as planned.
Once that concludes, it inevitably won’t take too long for fans to want to go on another epic adventure, so which game Square Enix plans to remake next is obviously on everyone’s minds. Now, one potential target has emerged, and the community really has no idea how to feel about it at all.
In case you missed it, FFVII Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi spoke to GamerBraves (via GamesRadar+) on YouTube, where he brought up the topic of a Final Fantasy VI remake, and who should lead the project if it does enter production.
“I have received a lot of voices from fans to make a Final Fantasy 6 remake. I have been involved in the Final Fantasy 7 remake project for now, about 10 years, from start to finish – and [I’m] now finally seeing basically the end of the tunnel – so in that respect, because I have used up all this time into producing this remake of Final Fantasy 7, should I be the one to undertake remaking another series?”
Over on Reddit, one user shared that information with the community (via Insider Gaming), and it’s safe to say there was a lot of opinion on who should lead, whether FFVI is the best option, or even if it should be remade at all.
“FF6 is my favorite game in the series, but I do not remotely want a remake. Trying to reimagine something on the scale of the World of Ruin with the AAA scope of a modern Final Fantasy title would take way too long, be way too expensive and just generally not worth it,” one comment read.
While another added, “Give it to the Octopath [Traveler] team and let them cook. I feel like that’s the best possible way to go here.”
“Agree 100%! Hopefully, they’ll get someone who’s up to the task. Otherwise, just leave it. Don’t need a remake,” a third said.
Given how successful the FFVII Remake has been so far it would make a lot of business sense for Square Enix to pick a new target and go for it, when all is said and done with the final part of the trilogy. That said, there are plenty of potential games to pick from, so if you’re particularly attached to one, try not to get your hopes up too much.
