With the recent reveal trailer for God of War Laufey having mixed reactions from the fan base, it might be nice to learn that yet another God of War game might already be in the pipeline. Love or hate Faye being cast as the main protagonist in the upcoming title, the God of War franchise seems to be going from strength to strength with many ideas for future games bouncing around the creative team. Could the next title be another change of direction or back to the familiar bearded bruiser? Let’s find out!
Let’s face it, not everyone is excited about a God of War adventure that doesn’t feature the legendary Kratos or, indeed, Atreus, whom we’ve grown to love over the last two games. And we don’t even want to get started talking about a chatty jello cube that spits out more quippy one-liners than a Joss Whedon movie. Luckily, according to Pirat_Nation on X, God of War 6 might be returning to more familiar ground for fans of God of War and God of War Ragnarök.
This new rumor suggests that after God of War Laufey, we’ll be getting an Atreus-led adventure rather than a remake of older titles. This is welcome news for those who aren’t particularly looking forward to the upcoming 2027 adventure. If God of War 6 chooses to focus on Atreus, then we’re back on more familiar territory. After the events of God of War Ragnarök (no spoilers), it’d be amazing to play as Atreus as he forges his own path while searching for giants.
Getting to explore the nine realms with Atreus could feel like a refreshing start for the franchise, and it would be exciting to see what kind of man he grows into. It also leaves the door wide open for Kratos to pop in and out of the adventure as much as the developers like. Kratos, in a pure mentor role, could add a strong narrative layer to the adventure and even a moral true line for Atreus to try to live up to. Also, wandering through the nine realms leaves the door wide open for some imaginative creature encounters and alien worlds to discover.
With Atreus in search of the remaining giants, God of War 6 might delve more into Faye’s past life and even her bond with a young Atreus before her death. If well written, this could tie God of War Laufey and God of War 6 together very well and see both games complementing each other. Santa Monica Studios have a talent for showing strange new worlds to the audience while grounding it all with morality and a strong narrative.
With these rumors not officially confirmed yet, we will have to wait and see what the next mainline God of War game brings us. Sure, a Loki adventure through the nine realms sounds appealing, but many still hope that Kratos will take the helm and take us on an Egyptian expedition. Whichever direction the series takes, we can be sure the next adventure will be confident and competent with its visuals, gameplay, combat and storytelling. Hopefully, God of War 6 is just one of many future adventures we have to look forward to.
