Hogwarts Legacy came out three years ago, and the ripple effects of its success are still being felt. It has sold over 40 million copies since its launch, putting it in the top 20 all-time in individual game sales. To put that into perspective, it’s right below several of the most successful Call of Duty games, and directly above Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart Wii.
At this point, its market penetration is mostly saturated, given that Hogwarts Legacy has been part of several free giveaways, but it’s proven to have a very long tail thanks to the strength of the IP. In circles like Reddit, fans are discussing the perfect setting and era, and it looks like there’s a consensus. While there are many possibilities for where the sequel could go, most people seem aligned on one idea.
WB hasn’t officially unveiled the full concept, setting, and time period for the Hogwarts Legacy sequel, but fans are hoping it’ll mix things up again.
Here is the current concept everyone is rallying around right now from user kitkathy1994: “The best part of Hogwarts Legacy is being able to make your own character. We have seen and gone over Harry’s story so much and you want another repetition? This universe has so much potential if we can just explore other aspects of it. Frankly I would love a game set in this universe outside of Hogwarts. An open world story-driven RPG where you play as an adult Auror investigating dark magic crimes would be a fun game, like LA Noire.”
Some fans are into the concept in general, even if it doesn’t end up making it into the Hogwarts Legacy sequel: “Dude, I want that as a TV series so bad. I’ve been saying it for a decade, give me a more adult Auror true detective show.”
Others want more tie-ins: “It would be cool to have more tie-ins to the Harry Potter timeline that actually felt like they could be meaningful in some sort of way, not just random characters with familiar last names and mechanics/voice lines that have the sole purpose of referencing the source material.”
In a way, this detective Auror concept could be a good way to recycle some of the dead concepts from the failed Fantastic Beasts franchise. Since Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore was the lowest-grossing movie of the entire Harry Potter IP, the Wizarding World team went back to the drawing board and has put the prequel series on hiatus for the past four years.
Since Hogwarts Legacy overperformed, it stands to reason that amid the hype cycle for the new TV show, the sequel could do just as well as the first, if not better.
