Historically, George Lucas’s Star Wars movies have often been appropriate for the whole family to watch, so we break down whether The Mandalorian & Grogu keeps with tradition and remains kid-friendly. The Lucasfilm movie is a continuation of the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, starring Pedro Pascal as the space bounty hunter, Din Djarin.
While Star Wars is generally a family-friendly franchise, there have been exceptions to this rule, especially in the era of Disney Star Wars. The Last Jedi and The Acolyte have some of the galaxy far, far away’s few shirtless scenes, while Rogue One and its spinoff, Andor, are the franchise’s darkest offerings, with the former ending with the deaths of its main characters.
However, The Mandalorian shares more in common with Lucas’s original Star Wars trilogy than those Disney releases. Between Grogu’s adorable antics and the relatively tame action of Mando’s adventures, the Disney+ series is certainly family-friendly. So does that continue into the series’ big-screen continuation?
For the most part, yes. The Mandalorian & Grogu is rated PG-13, and is potentially fine viewing for kids as young as 10-11, depending on the child. We’ll break down why the latest Star Wars movie received that rating and what else parents need to know before bringing their kids to see The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Why The Mandalorian & Grogu Is Rated PG-13
According to the Motion Picture Association (MPA), The Mandalorian & Grogu is rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and action. The sci-fi violence included in this particular Star Wars movie involves gladiator-style combat scenes, blaster fights/explosions, vehicle chases, and a few battles against big monsters.
There’s little to no blood and gore in the movie; the most concerning content comes from scenes that may be potentially scary or disturbing to young children. These include some of Rotta the Hutt’s gladiator battles with sci-fi monsters and Mando’s fight against the dragonsnake, which leaves him with a potentially fatal wound. Toward the end, the dragonsnake is depicted swallowing/eating a few large creatures.
What Else Parents Need To Know About The Mandalorian & Grogu
Beyond the sci-fi violence and action mentioned in the MPA’s rating, The Mandalorian & Grogu also features a few scenes of characters drinking what appears to be alcohol in cantinas. There’s very little swearing — a character mentioning “hell” is as bad as it gets. There’s no human shirtless scenes, though Rotta the Hutt’s CGI body does, inexplicably, have abs.
There is plenty for kids to enjoy in The Mandalorian & Grogu, including the adorable green character himself. The Star Wars movie features Grogu getting into plenty of hijinks, stealing food from unsuspecting vendors, and generally being the cute character audiences have come to know and love. He’s joined by a quartet of Anzellans — the species of Babu Frik, who was introduced in The Rise of Skywalker — for plenty of delightful fun.
Additionally, the movie explores themes of loyalty and found-family that can be understood by children. Other positive messages conveyed in the film are the importance of doing the right thing, maintaining integrity when dealing with corrupt individuals, working with a team and taking care of loved ones. While Mando is a bounty hunter, he operates by a strict code of ethics and protects those who are weaker or more vulnerable than him.
Ultimately, The Mandalorian & Grogu may be a bit too scary for young children, but its story and themes are perfectly fine for kids 13 and older. For children aged 10-13, it’s best for parents to trust their best judgment before taking them to see the new Star Wars movie. Still, The Mandalorian & Grogu keeps with Star Wars tradition and offers another family-friendly theatrical experience.
