Although a couple of years have passed since Henry Cavill last played Superman, and he has moved on to other projects, it’s now officially the end of an era for his version of the Man of Steel. Henry Cavill gained recognition when he was cast as Charles Brandon in The Tudors in 2007, but his big break arrived six years later when he was cast as Clark Kent/Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.
Man of Steel explored the origin story of Superman and how he became the superhero everyone now knows, as well as his encounter with the evil General Zod (Michael Shannon). Despite some controversial decisions, Man of Steel was a box office success, and even though it received mixed reviews from critics, Cavill’s performance was praised. Cavill went on to reprise his role as Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, Snyder’s cut of Justice League, and uncredited cameos in Black Adam and The Flash.
Despite there still being a lot more to explore in Cavill’s Superman’s story, the DC Extended Universe ended, and the DC Universe was launched. Although the DC Universe kept some characters and actors from the DCEU, the major superheroes were recast, most notably Superman. Any hope there could still be for a final appearance of Cavill as Superman is now over, officially marking the end of an era for the Man of Steel.
DC Has Officially Moved On With A New Version Of Superman
Unlike the DCEU, which only covered movies and TV shows (and in the latter, it only had the first season of Peacemaker), James Gunn’s DC Universe is a multimedia franchise covering movies, TV shows, video games, and tie-in comic books. Thanks to this, the DC Universe aims to be a much bigger, connected, and complete universe than the DCEU, but that required some changes and recasting some popular characters.
The DCEU kicked off in 2013 with Man of Steel, and just like it, the DC Universe also began its big-screen run with a Superman movie, though with a different actor. DC Universe’s Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, and it skips Superman’s origin story, instead meeting the character as an established superhero. Superman was a critical and commercial success, and Corenswet will return in Supergirl before starring in the sequel Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for a 2027 release.
Cavill was the Superman for a generation, but the DC Universe is fully focused on Corenswet’s version and expanding his story and presence in this new universe. Not only is he set to return in a sequel, but he’s also sharing the screen one more time with Milly Alcock’s Kara Zoe-El, a.k.a. Supergirl. The superhero cousins shared the screen for the first time in Superman, although briefly, and it’s to be seen if they will have more interactions in Supergirl.
Unfortunately, there’s no room for Cavill’s Superman in the DC Universe (or, at least, not for now), and it’s to be seen how it will continue to expand the story and character of Corenswet’s Superman following Supergirl and Man of Tomorrow.
Henry Cavill’s Superman Never Got The Closure He Deserved
While the arc of a character has to reach an end at some point, especially comic book characters, the truth is that Cavill’s Superman deserved a lot better. Despite being the character who kicked off the DCEU, Cavill’s Superman never got the closure he deserved. After his death at the end of Dawn of Justice, Superman was brought back to life in both versions of Justice League, and after that, he only had brief cameo appearances in other movies.
The DCEU left Superman’s story incomplete in the most unsatisfying and frustrating way, and this was, in large part, a consequence of all the behind-the-scenes problems that Justice League went through, along with Warner Bros. never having a clear plan for him. As disappointing as it is, Henry Cavill’s Superman era is now over, and while Cavill continues exploring other franchises and roles, the DC Universe is focused on its new Superman.
