Lord of the Rings‘ newest era is giving fans of Tolkien’s work a lot to think about in the months and years ahead, with several highly anticipated releases that are already proving to be divisive among diehards. For starters, Amazon’s Rings of Power series has already caused a wave of pushback for failing to capture the essence of Tolkien’s work, though there’s no doubt most LOTR enthusiasts will be tuning in to Season 3 this November to see if that has changed.
Beyond Rings of Power‘s upcoming release, the 2027 launch of Andy Serkis’ The Hunt For Gollum is also catching flak as many fans don’t think the premise makes much sense as a full-on feature film. And if that wasn’t enough, Stephen Colbert’s recently announced project, Shadow of the Past, is set to adapt the early chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring that Peter Jackson’s 2001 film skipped or condensed, and many fans aren’t convinced that Colbert has the writing chops to pull it off.
However, if you’re feeling anxious about the future of the Lord of the Rings franchise, there’s an exciting new release scheduled for this winter titled Sieges of Middle-Earth, and it’s one that Tolkien purists will definitely not want to sleep on (via BGG).
War of the Ring: Sieges of Middle-Earth is an upcoming expansion to the critically acclaimed Lord of the Rings board game that is officially set to launch in Q4 2026, or sometime between October and December this year. Sieges of Middle-Earth is the fourth official expansion from Ares Games for War of the Ring: Second Edition, and it will introduce enhanced features for siege battles against the strongholds of the Free Peoples throughout the game.
New game mechanisms bring those desperate battles to the forefront of the conflict: the Shadow player can field powerful siege engines to smash fortifications and spread despair among the defenders, while the Free Peoples player may attempt heroic feats, lead bold sorties, and inspire last stands that can turn the tide of battle.
Included in the upcoming expansion, which will be featured at this year’s Gen Con later this month, are several unique new gameplay mechanics and items such as new plastic figurines, special dice and tokens, and “cards to add to the core game” that will expand the strategic options and enhance narrative elements and storytelling as well.
Sieges of Middle-Earth was also featured at the UK Games Expo (via BGG) alongside Ares Games’ upcoming War of the Ring Card Game expansion, Hope & Despair, both of which have been confirmed for a Q4 2026 release. Both games are absolutely worth checking out if you’re a hardcore Lord of the Rings fan looking for a unique adventure in Middle-Earth.
