This December, the X-Men are officially replacing the Avengers as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Although the Avengers and the X-Men both protect the same world, their missions usually develop along different paths. The X-Men devote most of their attention to mutant affairs, whether they involve anti-mutant organizations or hostile mutant factions. The Avengers generally address crises that place the entire planet at risk, including alien invasions, rogue artificial intelligences, mystical catastrophes, and cosmic wars that no single nation or superhero can fight alone. This informal division of responsibilities gives both teams their unique kinds of conflicts that keep them from stepping on each other’s business.
Marvel’s large-scale crossover events usually erase those boundaries and bring the Avengers and the X-Men together against enemies that threaten everyone equally. Invasions by alien forces such as the Phoenix, the Brood, Knull, or other universe-spanning dangers require the strengths of both teams, and decades of shared history have created personal relationships that make their alliances far more effective. For example, Beast and Storm have served as Avengers, and Wolverine has fought beside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for years. Meanwhile, Spider-Man has built enduring friendships with many X-Men despite never becoming one himself, and Captain America has helped build diplomatic ties with mutantkind.
Marvel’s biggest crossover event of 2026 is more than enough to bring the X-Men and the Avengers together, albeit with the implication of defeat for one of the teams.
Marvel Announces Maximum X-Men As The Avengers Disappear
Maximum X-Men; Written By Christopher Yost; Art By Tony S Daniel
At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Marvel officially confirms the start of a new ongoing X-Men run, Maximum X-Men, penned by X-Force writer Christopher Yost and illustrated by The Avengers artist Tony S. Daniel. Maximum X-Men follows a group of veteran mutants who fill the role of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes after the Avengers disband following the events of Armageddon. While Marvel avoids revealing spoilers surrounding Armageddon and its aftermath, the Avengers are set to break apart, forcing several X-Men icons to defend Earth from threats that usually concern heroes like Iron Man and Captain Marvel.
The Maximum X-Men roster of mutants is composed, at least initially, of Colossus, Psylocke, Bishop, Firestar, Iceman, Justice, and Wolverine, and it’s led by Storm, who continues to build her legacy as one of the most influential mutants in the Marvel Universe following the incedible feats of power she displayed in her 2025 and 2026 solo series. Marvel teases the Maximum X-Men’s first trial in the form of an adventure in the Negative Zone, which sounds like a herculian task for a new team, regardless of their members.
