Caine, the latest spinoff in the John Wick franchise, has reached a major milestone.
The franchise has continued to expand well beyond Keanu Reeves’ titular assassin, with the Ballerina spinoff introducing audiences to another corner of the High Table’s underworld and Lionsgate moving ahead with a standalone movie centered on Donnie Yen’s fan-favorite assassin, Caine. Filming on the latest John Wick spinoff was only announced four months ago, making its latest update an exciting and encouraging sign that the project remains on track.
Yen confirmed on Instagram that filming has officially wrapped on the untitled John Wick spinoff, sharing a photo of the film’s clapperboard alongside the caption, “That’s a wrap!” The post also included the hashtags #CaineMovie, #JohnWick, and #DirectorMode, a nod to his directorial debut.
The update marks a significant step forward for the project, which Lionsgate first announced earlier this year. According to Deadline, the latest installment follows the events of John Wick: Chapter 4 and sees Caine after he is freed from his obligations to the High Table. Yen reprises the role alongside returning John Wick: Chapter 4 star Rina Sawayama as Akira, with Mattson Tomlin and Michael McGrale penning the screenplay.
The movie has also made waves with some exciting casting developments, with Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery joining the project along with Harry Potter star Bill Nighy joining the John Wick universe — both in undisclosed roles.
Lionsgate has made no secret of its confidence in Caine as the next major figure in the John Wick universe. When the project was announced, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said Caine’s popularity after John Wick: Chapter 4 made his story “the most natural next chapter of the franchise.”
Yen has also shared ambitious goals for the film. In a statement previously released by Lionsgate, he said:
“What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero. This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story. As both director and actor, I’m excited to shape this chapter in a way that reflects everything I’ve learned over decades in action cinema, while building something that feels entirely new.”
With principal photography now complete, the Caine movie is one step closer to joining the ever-growing John Wick universe. While Lionsgate has yet to announce a release date, the latest production update suggests fans may not have to wait much longer for the studio to reveal what’s next for the franchise’s blind assassin.
