PlayStation has announced that it is reviving a classic PS2 game released back in 2005 for PlayStation 5 consoles, and you may want to check it out, especially if you’re familiar with what the studio produced after it. Even though there are some exciting new games for Sony’s current-generation console on the way, like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and the anticipated Marvel’s Wolverine, we are also seeing a wave of older titles hit the modern platform, allowing them to be replayed – or, for some, played for the very first time.
This is happening with a classic 2005 game. As was reported by Push Square, a PlayStation 2 game, released in 2005, is being re-released for PlayStation 5 pretty soon. The title will be made available on both PS5 and PS4 consoles starting on July 21. To play it, you’ll need a Premium tier PlayStation Plus membership, as this is one of the games joining the service’s catalog this month, though it is locked behind the highest membership tier.
The PlayStation Plus Premium freebie in July is called Indigo Prophecy. Also known as Fahrenheit in Europe, Indigo Prophecy is the second game developed by Quantic Dream and the studio’s first interactive drama. For reference, Quantic Dream is the studio that created Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human. In a sense, Indigo Prophecy is something of a precursor to Heavy Rain and everything else the developer released afterward, given the choice-based narrative developments that build the story.
This is one of director David Cage’s earliest works, so if you’re interested in his repertoire, despite all the controversy around him, this game will give you some insight into how his work has evolved over the past 21 years. The physical remaster of Indigo Prophecy arrived for PS4 consoles back in 2020, as part of the game’s 15th anniversary celebrations. Of course, via PlayStation Plus, you’ll be playing the digital version of the game.
In Indigo Prophecy, you control three distinct characters. The first of them is Lucas Kane, a man who is supernaturally possessed and forced to commit murder. The other two are NYPD detectives Carla Valenti and Tyler Miles, who are in search of the alleged criminal. The game has different endings depending on the choices you make along the way, though not to the extent of the multiple endings in Detroit: Become Human, for instance.
Indigo Prophecy is not a perfect game, and it’s widely considered to be a cult classic with a few downsides. Even so, it is a classic that may be worth checking out, especially if you’re into seeing how games and specific genres evolved over time. If that’s the case, I highly recommend playing this 2005 game, now on PlayStation 5.
