Point Break Returns to Theaters for 35th Anniversary

Experience the edge once more when Point Break returns to theaters this August. Resurgence Media, Saga Arts, and Fathom Entertainment are bringing the action thriller back to theaters nationwide with a new, special 4K restoration. The re-release celebrates the film’s 35th anniversary and is the latest in a series of 90s movies to get the theatrical treatment from Fathom Entertainment following Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle II: The Secret of the Ooze earlier this year.

Point Break stars Keanu Reeves a Johnny Utah, a young FBI agent investigating a series of Los Angeles bank robberies committed by a gang calling themselves the Ex-Presidents. Believing the gang members could be surfers, the FBI sends Utah undercover to infiltrate the surfing crew led by Patrick Swayze as the charismatic surfer Bodhi. As Utah tries to unravel the truth and is drawn deeper into the world of surfing and thrill-seaking, he finds his loyalties being tested by his new friends.

On August 16 and 19, Point Break returns to theaters, giving fans a chance to catch all the action on the big screen once more. With memorable performances from Reeves and Swayze, as well as the rest of the cast, including Gary Busey, Lori Petty, John C. McGinley, James LeGros and Anthony Kiedis, a memorable script from W. Peter Iliff, and Kathryn Bigelow’s dynamic directing, the film has been inspiring fans for decades.

Besides the 4K restoration, another reason to catch Point Break on the big screen is the film’s new introduction from surfing legend Matt Archbold. As a surf double for Swayze and the person who helped teach Reeves, Swayze, Kiedis, and other cast members how to surf for the film, Archbold has plenty of memories and stories to share. In the exclusive introduction, he shares behind-the-scenes stories from the production and reflects on the themes of the film.

These themes of surfing, freedom, and risk are some of what has made Point Break last after all these years. It celebrates a community, including them in the production to accurately capture what makes it so special. In the same spirit, the theatrical re-release will also be supported by a celebration across this surfing community including special content from the World Surf League, SURFER Magazine, Men’s Journal, FUEL TV and SURFER TV, as well as a special collaboration with the U.S. Open of Surfing.

Point Break had a remake in 2015 and recently a sequel TV series from AMC was announced picking up 25 years after the events of the film. Centering on a new hesit team while still maintaining the film’s connections to the Ex-Presidents gang, the show is sure to introduce a whole new generation to the ideals of surfing and freedom. There is no better time to visit (or re-visit) the original film that started it all, mixing thrills, action, extreme sports, and endlessly quotable dialogue.
