Shudder’s longest-running horror franchise is diving into its next nightmare, adapting a chilling new contender to fill the void left by Backrooms.
A24’s horror film, directed by Kane Parsons in his debut, based on his own web series inspired by the “Backrooms” creepypasta, was released in theaters in late May and became a veritable phenomenon, grossing $350 million against its small $10 budget, becoming the second-highest-grossing horror movie of 2026 behind Obsession ($403 million).
Now, according to Variety, the long-running V/H/S found-footage horror franchise is expanding with a new movie set in the SCP Foundation universe, as Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios are teaming up to produce V/H/S: SCP, marking the first feature-length addition to the online collective fiction project, the SCP (Special Containment Procedures) Foundation.
Roy Lee and Steven Schneider will produce the film for Spooky Pictures alongside Josh Goldbloom and Michael Schreiber. Goldbloom previously produced V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, and V/H/S/Halloween, while Schreiber worked on V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/Beyond. Executive producers include Image Nation Studios CEO Ben Ross and Rami Yasin of Spooky Pictures.
Spooky Pictures co-founder Steven Schneider said in a press release:
The horror genre continues to be a remarkable launchpad for new talent to share original creations, and the vast SCP universe has provided a vital incubator for this creativity to thrive. Along with INS, this next project reinforces our shared commitment to look in new and unexpected spaces for stories. We can’t wait to expand the V/H/S franchise with new fresh and terrifying stories that will keep viewers coming back for more.
Launched in 2008 as a collaborative online storytelling project, the SCP Foundation has since evolved into one of the internet’s largest fan-created horror and science fiction universes – spawning video games, short films, and web series.
V/H/S: SCP will bring the franchise’s signature found-footage format to the SCP universe, presenting its story through “recovered field documentation,” video evidence collected, censored, and archived by the secretive Foundation. Each anthology segment will center on a different anomalous object, creature, or containment breach within the organization’s classified files.
V/H/S is an anthology franchise consisting of eight found-footage feature films, two spin-off movies, and a miniseries. Inspired by an original concept from Brad Miska, the series revolves around collections of increasingly unsettling recordings presented through different media formats. While each installment is largely self-contained and created by different filmmakers and casts, recurring themes and connections hint at a shared mythology underlying the mysterious footage.
V/H/S: SCP is currently scheduled to hit theaters in 2027.
