One of the greatest eras in Star Trek history is officially coming to an end, with Captain Kirk leading this final mission. That alone is enough to make this a bittersweet farewell for longtime fans. Now, an early preview of this final chapter has arrived, teasing “a noble sacrifice” as part of the epic conclusion. With that ominous promise hanging over Trekkies’ heads, we’re already placing our bets on which crew member won’t make it out alive, and unfortunately, the odds seem to be stacked against Kirk.
Star Trek is in the midst of a generational run with its 12-issue Star Trek: The Last Starship series. Brought to life by the creative team of writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly alongside artist Adrián Bonilla, the series has delivered a Star Trek mission unlike anything fans have seen before.
Set after the Burn, the story follows Captain Kirk after he is resurrected in the 31st century, 700 years after his death, only to discover that nearly everything he fought to build, including the Federation itself, has fallen into ruin. Joining Captain Delacourt Sato and the crew of the U.S.S. Omega, the last remaining Starfleet vessel, Kirk and this next generation of heroes fight together to save the future.

Star Trek Fans Prepare to Say Goodbye to Captain Kirk Ahead of The Last Starship Finale
Main Cover by Hernan Gonzalez for Star Trek: The Last Starship #12 (2026)
Kirk, Sato, and Starfleet’s last loyal crews are preparing to make their final stand on October 21, 2026, with the release of Star Trek: The Last Starship #12, the series finale. Clocking in at 32 pages, this concluding chapter will be available for $4.99 at local comic shops and digitally upon release, with pre-orders ending September 14, 2026.
So far, the main cover and two variant covers for issue #12 have been revealed, along with a synopsis that is sure to leave fans of Kirk and the series on the edge of their seats. The official synopsis reads:
The final entry in the epic that has redefined the Federation. Captains Sato and Kirk have put aside their monumental differences. Zed has constructed an engineering masterpiece in the T’Galatheon Gate. All those who remain true to Starfleet’s ideals have miraculously gathered in one place, and they are prepared to hunker down within the Gate’s singularity to finally rebuild what they lost in The Burn…and it’s all too late. The Emerald Chain has sniffed out the motley assemblage and is decimating them in a brutal attack. But Sato, Kirk, and the crews of the U.S.S. Omega and U.S.S. Challenger have battled to find a whisper of a chance to save their galaxy more times than they can count. And they won’t let this last hope die without a vicious fight—or a noble sacrifice.
With The Last Starship series coming to an end, this already marks the conclusion of an epic era for the franchise. However, the finale will likely also serve as a bittersweet farewell to this incarnation of Captain Kirk. Given that the synopsis teases a “noble sacrifice,” it is safe to assume that not everyone will make it out of this final battle alive.
Furthermore, this version of Kirk has been living 700 years into the future, making his existence in the 31st century feel like borrowed time. Since he was never meant to be part of this era, it would feel fitting for this time-displaced Kirk to make the ultimate sacrifice, allowing this next generation of heroes to continue building a future that truly belongs to them. With this in mind, fans should prepare themselves for a potentially emotional and bittersweet goodbye to one of Star Trek’s greatest heroes.
