Netflix is seeing success for one of Taylor Sheridan’s hidden gems.
While Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise continues to be one of his biggest priorities, the popular creative has only gotten busier. However, while he is working on more projects than ever, one of his older series is now finding a new audience in 2026.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves is quietly becoming a streaming sensation, as it is currently sitting in the #7 spot on Netflix’s native Top 10 shows chart in the United States. The Western entry made its debut on November 5, 2023, and finished its run on December 17.
David Oyelowo stars as Bass Reeves, while Lauren E. Banks plays Jennie Reeves, along with Forrest Goodluck as Billy Crow, Demi Singleton as Sally Reeves, Dennis Quaid as Sherrill Lynn, Donald Sutherland as Isaac C. Parker, Grantham Coleman as Edwin Jones, and Barry Pepper as Esau Pierce The cast also features recurring guest stars such as Joaquina Kalukango, Heather Kafka, Lonnie Chavis, and Rob Morgan.
As of writing, Lawmen Bass Reeves season 1 has a stellar Rotten Tomatoes score of 79%. However, the audience score is significantly higher, as the eight-part series has 93%.
Following the Lawmen: Bass Reeves ending, season 2 hasn’t been formally announced by Paramount+. However, that doesn’t mean another season has been ruled out yet.
According to Oyelowo, Lawmen: Bass Reeves season 2 is quite possible. The actor shared with Variety back in 2023 that “The more people ask for more Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the sooner it’ll happen, I think. I loved, loved, loved playing that role. To saddle up again is something I’m open to, so you never know.”
But showrunner Chad Feehan has made it clear that if another season happens, there will be a big catch. The creator commented that “if there is another season of Lawmen, it will focus on a new lawman or law woman. There are several figures in history much like Bass who deserve their day in the sun. As much as it pains me that this marriage is taking a hiatus, that is the reality,” hinting that Lawmen would be changed into an anthology series.
Given how Lawmen: Bass Reeves has continued to improve and find a larger audience, time will tell if Paramount+ will eventually move forward with season 2. With its new streaming success, perhaps that will be the final push needed to get the series another season.
