Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian & Grogu
One of the biggest surprises in The Mandalorian & Grogu is the return of a Razor Crest for Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin. Ever since the bounty hunter’s original ship was obliterated by Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian season 2, Djarin and his adopted son had largely been using a custom N-1 Naboo Starfighter. However, there are actually some pretty good reasons why a new Razor Crest has been brought back to the franchise.
Following the original Razor Crest’s demise, the shift to a smaller starfighter made sense. When Djarin custom-built the N-1 on Tatooine as seen in The Book of Boba Fett, Grogu was training with Luke Skywalker at the time. Likewise, Djarin had gradually been drifting away from collecting bounties in favor of more personal missions like redeeming himself in the eyes of his clan and helping his fellow Mandalorians liberate their homeworld in The Mandalorian season 3.
However, Djarin and Grogu are now working for the New Republic hunting down Imperial Remnant warlords, meaning the N-1 would be somewhat impractical if he were to try to take any of them alive (The New Republic’s preference to gain new intel). Now, The Mandalorian & Grogu solves the issue in a pretty satisfying way across the board. Here’s how Djarin gets his new Razor Crest, and what ultimately happens to his N-1 Naboo Starfighter in the new Star Wars movie.
The New Republic Gave Din Djarin A Brand-New Razor Crest
Early on in The Mandalorian & Grogu’s first act, Din Djarin receives his brand-new ship courtesy of the New Republic itself.
After successfully taking out the Imperial warlord Commander Barro in the movie’s opening action sequence, Din meets with Sigourney Weaver’s Colonel Ward to debrief. She then offers Djarin both his payment and an advance for his next job: a shiny new Razor Crest with yellow accents.
Unlike Djarin’s original ship from the Disney+ series, which was pretty worn down by The Mandalorian season 2, this version is noticeably cleaner and newer despite being a pre-Empire craft. Ward explains that the New Republic recovered this stock Razor Crest model from the private collection of a captured Imperial commandant who hoarded several vintage ships that remained largely untouched.
Honestly, it’s a pretty solid explanation for the Razor Crest’s return. Agreeing to take on the new mission involving the rescue of Jabba the Hutt’s son Rotta in exchange for information from the Hutt Syndicate about the mysterious Imperial Commander Coin, Djarin and Grogu take off in their new Razor Crest alongside Star Wars Rebels’ Zeb Orellios, who helped convince Djarin to take the job (and ship).
Why Star Wars Brought Back The Razor Crest For The Mandalorian & Grogu
From a storytelling perspective, giving a Razor Crest back to Din Djarin was honestly the right move. After all, the original ship became pretty iconic during the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, having been on-screen just as much as Djarin and Grogu themselves during their first adventures traveling from world to world.
Beyond the nostalgia factor, there’s also the simple fact that, as cool as the N-1 is, it’s still pretty small and cramped. The Mandalorian & Grogu’s plot and bigger scope absolutely required a bigger ship to be used, especially considering just how large (and jacked) Rotta the Hutt is in his brand-new appearance. Likewise, Zeb is essentially Djarin’s New Republic assigned partner/handler in this movie. There’s no realistic way he was ever fitting inside the N-1 alongside Din and Grogu (though that is pretty funny to imagine). It’s why they used a Rebel U-Wing in the movie’s opening action sequence.
Don’t Worry, The Mandalorian Still Has His Custom N-1 Starfighter
Thankfully, Star Wars fans don’t need to worry about the N-1’s fate. Despite the return of a Razor Crest, The Mandalorian & Grogu quietly confirms that Djarin still has the custom Naboo starfighter he built during The Book of Boba Fett.
During the movie’s second act, the N-1 can briefly be spotted parked beside the Razor Crest when Din and Grogu return to their homestead on Nevarro. Without a doubt, The Mandalorian’s N-1 Naboo starfighter is objectively one of the coolest (and fastest) starfighters the Star Wars franchise has ever introduced. As such, completely abandoning the N-1 after The Mandalorian season 3 would have been a tragically huge waste.
Thankfully, The Mandalorian & Grogu keeps both ships in play moving forward for future Star Wars projects involving Din Djarin and Grogu. After all, who says a guy can’t have two awesome ships? Basically, Star Wars’ resident space dad now has the galactic equivalent of a minivan and a sports car (which is pretty dang fun all things considered).
The Mandalorian & Grogu is now playing in theaters from Lucasfilm.
