The news that The Pitt will be welcoming a new series regular to the ER in season 3 is a welcome surprise after this character has already established themself as a fan favorite in the show’s first two outings. Essentially an audacious blend of E.R and 24, HBO’s The Pitt is among the most acclaimed new shows in recent years. Each season of the medical drama follows a chaotic day in the titular understaffed, overrun Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s ER.
Nicknamed “The Pitt” thanks to persistent problems with overcrowding, the show’s setting is home to a diverse cast of nurses, residents, student doctors, interns, and surgeons, all presided over by series star Noah Wyle’s attending Dr. Michael Robinavitch. Traumatized by working through the COVID-19 pandemic, The Pitt’s Dr. Robby is holding it together by a thread when viewers first meet him, but he’s not the only one with problems.
From Isa Briones’ ambitious Dr. Santos to Gerran Howell’s naive Dr. Dennis Whitaker, The Pitt’s cast of characters includes medical practitioners at every stage of their careers. The one thing they all have in common is a hard time handling the constant trauma of the show’s eponymous environment, which results in a lot of staff turnover between seasons. Tracy Ifeachor’s Dr. Collins left the Pitt after season 1’s finale, while Supriya Ganesh’s Dr. Samira Mohan left the setting after The Pitt season 2’s ending.
The Pitt Season 3’s New Series Regular Is A Great Change
As production recently commenced on The Pitt season 3, the show’s cast changes were officially set in stone. Most of the central stars will return, although Shabana Azeez’s young Victoria Javadi will now be working in the Psychology department instead of the ER, having finished her rotation after season 2. However, one recurring star will become a series regular in this upcoming outing, as Ayesha Harris’s Dr. Parker Ellis moves from the night shift’s senior resident to a daytime role.
Dr. Ellis was one of season 1 and 2’s best breakout stars, so the news that she will now become a series regular is a welcome change. It is not yet clear how Ellis’s promotion will impact Patrick Ball’s Dr. Langdon, a fan favorite who was the ER’s senior resident but got caught stealing drugs from patients in one of season 1’s most dramatic moments. Although Langdon returned to work in the ER after attending rehab in season 2, his relationship with his attending, Dr. Robby, took a long time to heal.
Ellis’s promotion may mean that she is replacing Langdon as the day shift’s senior resident, but there are a lot of other possibilities at play. Since the show only covers a single day per season, Harris’s character may simply be called in to work unexpectedly due to whatever disaster the team is dealing with in this outing, and she may remain mostly a night shift resident.
She also could be one of more than one senior residents in the ER, meaning her promotion won’t necessarily result in Langdon’s demotion. In any case, the change is an exciting one. Harris has been a welcome presence in everything from Daisy Jones & the Six to Glamorous and Matlock in recent years, and Ellis’s drama-free refusal to get involved in the personal politics of the Pitt’s staff was a memorable moment from season 2.
Even more so than Dr. Santos’s love interest, Dr. Garcia, Ellis has a commendable commitment to keeping her nose out of the lives of her co-workers. As such, it will be interesting to see how this approach aligns with Dr. Robby’s treatment of his staff as an ersatz family unit.
Elevating Harris to a series regular also fulfills a major fan demand among viewers of The Pitt, with many audience members calling for a night shift character to become a major player in the show’s story in this third outing. It is also better for the series to choose Ellis for this expanded role rather than Shawn Hatosy’s The Pitt fan favorite Abbott, a beloved character who could easily be ruined by too much screen time.
While the unflappable military veteran is among the show’s most popular characters for a reason, Abbott’s character works best in small doses. Whether it is shrugging off a bullet wound or casually donating blood while performing surgery, Abbott has been given some of the show’s most absurdly impressive flexes throughout its first two seasons, and his poignant conversation with Dr. Robby in the first episode means he is also responsible for one of the show’s most affecting moments.
However, it would be tough to maintain Abbott’s delicate balance of cocky charisma and moments of unguarded emotional vulnerability with more screen time, and the character’s role as the night shift attending means he would also likely feel superfluous if he shared more screen time with the day shift attending Dr. Robby. In contrast, Harris’s Ellis is a perfect foil for an existing fan favorite, but also a character who would benefit from more screen time instead of this ruining her mystique.
The Pitt’s Dr. Ellis Is A Perfect Foil For Another Fan Favorite Character
Ball’s Dr. Langdon is popular among viewers for many reasons, but it is primarily his commitment to delivering medical excellence under pressure that makes the character so likable. Despite abusing drugs while working in season 1, The Pitt’s Dr. Langdon remains a firm fan favorite precisely because he cares about his patients.
The Pitt Is Officially Switching Formats In Season 3
The Pitt is changing its format for season 3 by staggering the arrivals of characters, which will be a major departure from the first two seasons.
Also, as evidenced by one gruesome and incredibly tense moment from season 2, Langdon is a very capable and audacious doctor. The thing is, Ellis shares this same determination and commitment to her work, but without Langdon’s big character flaw.
Her more prominent role in season 3 will likely lead to further comparisons between her and Langdon, and it will be interesting to see how the series uses this to flesh out both characters in the next outing. Thus, The Pitt’s big cast change couldn’t be better timed, as Dr. Ellis’s new role as a series regular has the opportunity to improve another fan favorite’s role while also expanding her story.
