Timothy Olyphant‘s busy summer is continuing to resonate.
The 58-year-old actor has a leading role in the upcoming Apple TV crime thriller, starring opposite Anya Taylor-Joy, but he’s also reunited with a recurring scene partner to play Jennifer Garner’s love interest in Peacock’s The Five-Star Weekend, which is appealing to both critics and audiences.
The Five-Star Weekend, which is based on Elin Hilderbrand’s bestselling novel, has an audience score of 74%. The show’s starry cast earned most of the praise, although some commentators advise against reading the novel and then watching the adaptation since there are notable differences between the two.
The reception for Five-Star Weekend extends Olyphant’s positive streak. His last four shows have fresh audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes, with Five-Star Weekend making it five.
In terms of reviews by professional critics, Olyphant’s score is even more impressive: all of his TV credits, since his breakout role as Raylan Givens on Justified, are categorized as Fresh. That includes guest appearances and main cast roles. The Five-Star Weekend has been largely praised by critics. It sits at 89% based on 28 reviews.
The series spotlights Hollis Shaw (played by Garner, also an executive producer on the show). Hollis is a successful food blogger who has built a following on social media, enough to be a recognized name that’s featured on morning news programs. But she’s been struggling since the sudden death of her husband and breaks down during what should be a breezy promotional appearance.
As a way to wind down, Hollis hears about the idea to invite friends from different periods of her life for a weekend at her house in Nantucket. There is Dru-Ann (Scary Movie and One Battle After Another star Regina Hall), who is experiencing some professional turbulence. Tatum (Oscar nominee Chloë Sevigny) is dealing with a health scare.
Olyphant and Garner acted together in projects before The Five-Star Weekend, notably as love interests in 2006’s Catch and Release.
Brooke (The Good Place‘s D’Arcy Carden) is a bit of a social pariah because of a scandal involving her husband, while Gigi (Eternals star Gemma Chan) carries a secret that would upend the whole weekend. Olyphant plays Jack, Hollis’s first love, whom she repeatedly crosses paths with. Harlow Jane plays Caroline, Hollis’ daughter, who has a strained relationship with her mother.
The adaptation is developed by Bekah Brunstetter, with episodes directed by Minkie Spiro and Jennifer Morrison. What seems to appeal to both critics and general audiences is that, unlike so many star-filled limited series centered on women, Peacock’s latest is not defined by crime and dead bodies. There is angst, but there is refreshingly a lot of space for the talented Five-Star Weekend ensemble to be charming and funny.
All episodes of The Five-Star Weekend are now on Peacock.
