2026 has been a big year for Tomb Raider so far, and another major step in the franchise’s evolution has now been confirmed. Last December, Tomb Raider announced the 2026 release of Legacy of Atlantis, and in January, Amazon dropped a first look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in an upcoming Prime series.
It’s all timing out to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Tomb Raider series, making for a major franchise comeback after years of relative dormancy. The newest update is a little more bureaucratic than the rest, but it could still have a huge impact on Lara Croft’s future.
Tomb Raider parent company Embracer Group announced this week that a number of game development studios will be spun off into a company called Fellowship Entertainment, including Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics. Embracer describes the restructuring as a way to offer “each business the structure and leadership to realize more of its full potential,” setting up “a more disciplined group with two distinct businesses.”
True to its name, Fellowship Entertainment will also include two studios working on The Lord of the Rings games — Middle-Earth Enterprises and Kingdom Come Deliverance developer Warhorse Studios. Eidos Montreal, which has also worked on Tomb Raider in the past, is likewise part of the new group.
If all goes well, the separation of Fellowship Entertainment from Embracer Group at large could be a good thing for Tomb Raider. Embracer Group’s massive portfolio is a lot for any one company to manage, and a number of cancellations and closures have occurred under its leadership in the past.
The move shares an obvious resemblance with recent restructuring at Ubisoft, which similarly separated some of its assets into a subsidiary called Vantage Studios. In both cases, the most valuable IPs seem to be going to the new spin-offs, potentially freeing them from the baggage of studios and IPs with greater financial challenges.
In contrast to the AAA IPS collected under Fellowship Entertainment, the assets remaining at Embracer Group favor comparatively mid-budget titles (the SpongeBob SquarePants tie-in games, for example) and mobile ventures. This currently comprises a larger workforce and revenue stream than Fellowship, but Fellowship Entertainment might be primed for more growth.
For now, fans will just have to wait to see how Tomb Raider fares in Legacy of Atlantis and beyond. At the moment, a specific release date for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis has yet to be revealed.
