Warner Bros.’s upcoming movie set in the Westeros universe could be the key to solving Game of Thrones‘ biggest Targaryen mystery. Though A Song of Ice and Fire seems to center the Stark family as the protagonists of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones universe, it’s clear the author is partial to the Targaryens.
Fire & Blood, which was adapted into House of the Dragon, and Tales of Dunk and Egg, which was adapted into A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, are either completely about Targaryens or mostly feature Targaryens in key roles. By the end of Game of Thrones even, we learn the Stark bastard we’ve been rooting for is actually a Targaryen.
It’s the family that Martin is most interested in, and as the world has expanded and grown, it’s become more and more obvious that it’s from their history that much of the mystery and magic of the books extends from. House of the Dragon dove right into these mysteries with a big addendum to the lore from the very first episode in 2022.
At the end of “The Heirs of the Dragon”, Viserys I (Paddy Considine) tells Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) a closely guarded family secret, passed down from each Targaryen ruler of Westeros to the next. The secret is called “the song of ice and fire”, a prophecy that Aegon I had before he set out to conquer Westeros.
This prophecy, and it’s sister-prophecy, the “prince that was promised”, have been major parts of Game of Thrones since the series debuted in 1996 and the show premiered in 2016. However, this information regarding Aegon’s prophecy appears nowhere in Martin’s writings, making it new lore in the canon.
Game Of Thrones Is Releasing A Movie About Aegon The Conqueror
In the House of the Dragon premiere, we hear of Aegon’s prophecy and the “song of ice and fire”. Aegon prophesied a future where the White Walkers returned, and a Great War would destroy the living of Westeros and the world beyond. The Targaryen lord determined that only by uniting the realms of Westeros under Targaryen rule could the Prince That Was Promised be born, to lead the living in victory.
Before this, Aegon I was simply known as the Conqueror, the Targaryen who united Westeros under Targaryen rule and who later Targaryens often looked to when they wanted to manifest their own glory. Thanks to House of the Dragon, Aegon I has become entwined with the biggest mysteries of the franchise.
These mysteries could be further explored in the upcoming Game of Thrones movie, which is set to be about Aegon I and his subjugation of Westeros. Titled Aegon’s Conquest, this is the Game of Thrones universe’s first foray into film, and though there is not much information about the film yet, it’s likely his prophecy will figure heavily into the plot.
This reveal that Aegon I foresaw the White Walkers and the Prince That Was Promised was never anything that was mentioned in the books, and we still don’t know much more about it other than what Viserys I said. Aegon’s Conquest can dive deeper into that prophecy.
Aegon’s Prophecy Holds The Key To Other Unresolved Game Of Thrones Mysteries
The Aegon-song of ice and fire connection was a huge surprise in House of the Dragon, but it dovetails perfectly into the greater mysteries of the show. A lot has gone unanswered in the books, A Song of Ice and Fire, which remains unfinished, and even Fire & Blood, which is only part one of a two-part series.
There are mysteries galore, and many of them involve the Targaryens. The Prince That Was Promised, the Tragedy at Summerhall, and the ability of Dragon-fire and Valyrian steel to kill White Walkers are all mysteries that have been touched on either in the books, shows, or George R.R. Martin blog posts, but there is not much ligature between them.
Aegon’s Conquest would be the perfect opportunity to start tying together theories and puzzles that have been laid out in the universe. The Game of Thrones franchise has offered thrilling and compelling secrets, but it’s high time that fans start getting some answers after years of groping around in the dark.
