Batman is one of the most enduring pop culture figures of all time. Though many characters in the comic universe wax and wane in popularity, Batman is always up there with Spider-Man in terms of raw fame. There are always new Batman stories in the works, whether it’s film, TV, comics, gaming, or otherwise.
It’s one of the easiest things to be a fan of, since there are new takes coming out all the time, providing fresh new looks at the age-old character. The Caped Crusader has become a ubiquitous aspect of superhero culture, and it’s led to many polarizing representations, as each artist seeks to make their mark on billionaire Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting antics. Now, Zack Snyder fans are voicing their thoughts on a return.
Over on Reddit, fans are debating the return of Zack Snyder’s Batman in an official capacity. Fans are obviously split on the release.
Over in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, Snyder fans are quick to point out that it’s one of the least-referenced eras of Batman in the game, even though it encompasses decades of jokes and works related to Batman. With the Dawn of Justice outfit, the reference is pretty acutely taking on Batman vs. Superman: “Hang on a second, his mom’s name is ALSO Martha! Featured in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).”
Fans are acutely aware of the Martha meme: “This was the biggest joke about the movie, and every parody, in every TV mention. And every skit. And quite literally every possible meme. But the one thing the damn movie was known for, mainly because it wasn’t known for anything else.”
Other fans are just enjoying the ride, pointing out Easter eggs: “They poke so much fun at the DCEU in that game. In Arkham, you can walk up to Deadshot’s cell and he says ‘What are we? Some kinda rogues gallery to you?’ Then, Talia pulls out a picture of Jared Leto Joker as an embarassing phase for the Clown, who gives up information in exchange for her not leaking it. I don’t remember others exactly, but yeah they are there.”
Some don’t even see it as a dig: “This is barely even a dig at Snyder. It’s just a matter of fact thing that happens in the movie. It’s a plot point.”
No matter which era of Batman you prefer, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is an ode to Batman, and the fact that it blends Arkham-like gameplay with LEGO visualsis a great pitch for families and fans of the character. It’ll likely go down as one of the best Batman games ever.
What’s next, then? Well, fans are waiting for a triumphant return for the Batman: Arkham series at some point, beyond the scope of VR. Maybe Rocksteady has something cooking.
