Alien: Earth raised the bar for the science fiction franchise, but one scene was a little too intense.
Alien: Earth is set in 2120, two years before the events of the very first Alien film. The FX series follows a group of synthetic hybrids who are dubbed the Lost Boys. They are the first of their kind, created by Prodigy Corporation’s Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin), who is trying to achieve immortality by transferring the consciousness of humans into robotic bodies. The Lost Boys hybrids were all terminally ill children whom he claimed he was helping by giving them a second chance at life.
Alien has never shied away from violence and graphic imagery. From the horrifying Xenomorphs to the violent fates of their victims, the franchise has been known for its ability to repulse and impress its viewers. However, Alien: Earth’s editor, Regis Kimble, revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that there was one Xenomorph attack that was so gory that the series creator, Noah Hawley, told him to tone it down in post-production.
Kimble said that in the second episode of Alien: Earth season 1, there was a scene where a soldier was attacked by one of the deadly extraterrestrial monsters. Upon rewatching the footage after filming, Hawley told him that the sequence was too much for FX and asked him to make the violence less graphic. As a result, the editor darkened the scene, so the blood was less noticeable and cut down the more violent shots, making the gore less excessive.
Alien: Earth is the first TV show in the massive franchise. The series was released to critical acclaim, with many commending its bold take on such a well-established property. The actors’ performances, practical effects, and storylines were also praised by both critics and audiences alike. The show features a large ensemble cast, starring Sydney Chandler (Wendy), Alex Lawther (Joe), Babou Ceesay (Morrow), Adarsh Gourav (Slightly), Timothy Olyphant (Kirsh), Erana James (Curly), Jonathan Ajayi (Smee), Lily Newmark (Nibs), Kit Young (Tootles), David Rysdahl (Arthur), and Essie Davis (Dame).
Alien: Earth season 1 can now be streamed on Disney+. There is no release date for season 2 at the time of this article’s publication. However, filming for the second season is underway.
