The titular group in The Legend of Vox Machina has grown incredibly powerful, thanks to their powers, weapons, and magical artifacts. As a group of former mercenaries turned heroes within the Dungeons & Dragons world, the group has a lot of abilities. As of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4, the show is moving into its endgame, given that it is set to conclude with season 5. This means that, even more so than when they started, the characters of Vox Machina have grown significantly.
This is true regarding both personally and their strength in combat, the latter coming from various powers, weapons, and magical items they have acquired. It is worth noting, though, that things in The Legend of Vox Machina work slightly differently from how they did in the story on which the show is based, that being Critical Role‘s first D&D campaign. After all, D&D campaigns last hours upon hours, with this providing the players with the ability to use many more abilities than a streamlined narrative does.
As such, the story of The Legend of Vox Machina keeps the abilities of its titular group members to a manageable amount, so as not to confuse casual viewers unaware of Dungeons & Dragons and its related shows. Although the show keeps true to the classes of D&D and the abilities they possess, these do not come with the long-winded names, dice-roll requirements, or long-lasting effects that simply cannot be placed into a dramatized TV narrative.
With that being said, here are all of the main members of The Legend of Vox Machina in season 4, the powers they possess, and the weapons or items that grant them more abilities to combat the evils of Tal’Dorei.
Vax’ildan Vessar
Vax’ildan is one of the half-Elven twins of Vox Machina and, as he was in the original Critical Role campaign, is a rogue. This means he excels in stealth and dealing quick damage with his daggers, though, as alluded to earlier, The Legend of Vox Machina is not as strict in limiting its characters to certain roles. In the show, Vax has magical daggers that he can recall to his person, making him an expert in close combat and quick ranged attacks.
In The Legend of Vox Machina seasons 2 and 3, the group was tasked with obtaining several Vestiges of Divergence, powerful artifacts that would grant them the powers needed to defeat the Chroma Conclave, a group of dragons. The first Vestige of Divergence found in The Legend of Vox Machina is the Deathwalker’s Ward, a suit of armor that binds its wearer to the Matron of Ravens, a goddess who oversees the journey from life to death.
Vax becomes the champion of the Matron, thus granting him the Deathwalker’s Ward and the powers it bestows. These powers include flight, via giant raven wings, and enhanced speed, which allows Vax to blip from place to place in little to no time. Alongside the guidance of the Matron and, to an extent, her powers, the Deathwalker’s Ward gives Vax abilities that drastically embolden his existing rogue-like efficiency.
Vex’ahlia Vessar
Vex’ahlia, the twin sister of Vax, is a ranger in Critical Role, meaning she embodies the traits of one in The Legends of Vox Machina. Vex is an expert hunter and has a natural affinity with animals, as shown by her taming of Trinket, a brown bear. Vex primarily attacks from range, using a bow and arrow, and any ranged tricks she has up her sleeve. Like Vax, Vex eventually comes to possess a Vestige of Divergence, a bow named Fenthras.
Fenthras, like Vax’s armor, complements Vex’s pre-existing abilities. It allows her to shoot elemental arrows, from fire-tipped ones that cause explosions to lightning bolts. She can also create barbed vines from her bow, giving her the ability to ensnare enemies, too. Beyond that, Vex has a magical flying broom, which she often uses in combat to gain a birds-eye view of the battlefield and traverse large distances faster.
Percival de Rolo III
In Critical Role, Percival, better known as Percy, is a fighter with the gunslinger subclass, giving an insight into his character’s abilities in The Legend of Vox Machina. Like Vex, Percy prefers to fight from range using a “pepperbox,” another word for a gun that is unique to him in the world of Exandria. This is Percy’s main weapon of choice, invented by him before The Legend of Vox Machina began. While Percy is capable enough in hand-to-hand fighting, he is most dangerous from a distance, as shown in the opening episodes of season 4.
Beyond his firearm creations, Percy has other gadgets derived from his smart mind. One includes a glove that provides an electric pulse, which he often uses to subdue enemies in The Legend of Vox Machina. Percy’s tactical knowledge is also an asset to the team, which he often uses to form ambushes, plan attacks, and deploy traps of his own invention.
Keyleth
In terms of raw power, Keyleth is arguably the strongest member of the team in The Legend of Vox Machina. As a druid of the air ashari, Keyleth has the ingrained power to manipulate the elements, specifically air. However, as an heir chosen to one day lead her tribe, Keyleth undergoes the Aramenté, a journey that takes her to all four tribes to master their elements, too. In this sense, Keyleth is essentially The Legend of Vox Machina‘s version of the Avatar from The Last Airbender.
By the time of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4, Keyleth has mastered all four elements and is named the Voice of the Tempest, a powerful duty of the ashari. Be it creating ice spikes, manipulating water, breathing underwater, raising shields of earth and vines, controlling the winds, absorbing fire, and transforming into hugely powerful elemental creatures, Keyleth is one of the strongest members of Vox Machina, as she does not need a Vestige of Divergence to hold her own.
Pike, a cleric in both Critical Role and The Legend of Vox Machina, initially serves the Everlight, the goddess of redemption and healing. Naturally, this gives Pike the ability to heal her allies using the Everlight’s, well, light. She can also create constructs of light, be they giant barriers, handheld shields, maces, or other pieces of weaponry. This makes Pike formidable as a warrior, but she is primarily utilized as the team’s healer.
In The Legend of Vox Machina season 3, Pike is one of the characters who receives a Vestige: the Plate of the Dawnmartyr. This is a golden piece of armor that allows its wearer to absorb immense amounts of fire and heat before propelling it back where it came. The Plate of the Dawnmartyr was instrumental in defeating Thordak, the primary villain of The Legends of Vox Machina seasons 2 and 3.
However, obtaining the Plate from the depths of one of Exandria’s Hells came at a price; Pike began doubting the Everlight, eventually casting her faith aside and trusting more in herself. How this manifests into The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 remains to be seen, but, for now, Pike retains the abilities she always has, both as a cleric and a wielder of the Plate of the Dawnmartyr.
Grog Strongjaw
Grog Strongjaw is a goliath in Critical Role, named a half-giant in The Legend of Vox Machina due to rights issues. Despite that, Grog is a hulking barbarian in both. In The Legend of Vox Machina, his main powers stem from his brute strength, which allows him to dish out serious damage with either his fists or any other weapons he can get his hands on. As a barbarian, Grog can fly into a rage, drastically increasing his strength in times of great anger or desperation.
Grog is also proficient in many forms of weaponry, from swords to axes. Concerning the former, Grog was a brief wielder of Craven Edge, a sword that fueled his rage and drank the blood of its victims. Eventually, Grog cast this aside after it took a toll on his mind. Later, Grog was awarded the Bloodaxe, a powerful weapon he obtained after defeating his uncle in combat. For the most part, this grants Grog no special abilities, but only bolsters his fighting prowess.
As with many other members of Vox Machina, Grog came to possess a Vestige in season 2. This Vestige was known as the Titanstone Knuckles, a pair of gauntlets that grant Grog even more physical strength than he had before. Upon smashing the Knuckles together, Grog can grow in size, again only bolstering his immense raw power.
Scanlan Shorthalt
The seventh member of The Legend of Vox Machina is Scanlan Shorthalt, a bard. In the world of Dungeons & Dragons, bards possess magical abilities through the use of music. However, bard skillsets tend to lean more towards supporting allies, as opposed to outright offensive magic like wizards, sorcerers, and warlocks. In The Legend of Vox Machina, this manifests often via Scanlan’s skills.
Using his songs and various instruments, Scanlan can provide aid to his allies. This most often comes in the form of “Scanlan’s Hand,” a giant purple hand that can punch enemies, transport or shield his allies, or lift objects and creatures alike. Other spells are used by Scanlan, though his giant hand is undoubtedly the most common. Following the ChrAoma Conclave’s attack, Scanlan also obtained a Vestige of Divergence, Mythcarver.
Mythcarver is a sword that can bestow visions to its user, as highlighted when Scanlan uses it to track where his daughter, Kaylie, is. Beyond this ability, Mythcarver also simply increases Scanlan’s close combat proficiency. Although not the most skilled swordsman, Mythcarver has been shown to help out the bard and Vox Machina as a sword is typically expected to on a number of occasions.
Taryon Darrington
The most recent member to join The Legend of Vox Machina is Taryon Darrington, introduced in season 4’s opening episodes. Therefore, this character’s power set, abilities, and magical items are not as deeply fleshed out as those of the characters introduced back in season 1. That said, the show offers some insight into how Taryon Darrington can be utilized among the other ragtag members of Vox Machina.
Why The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 4 Recasts A Key Campaign Character Explained By Critical Role
EXCLUSIVE: The producers of The Legend of Vox Machina explain what led them to recast an important role when creating the Prime Video series.
Despite showing a bumbling attitude that does not quite paint Taryon as being as deadly as the other members of the group, the character has a unique ability; Taryon carries around deadly gems, each of which possesses a different color, shape, and, thus, power. One of the main ones highlighted in season 4 is a “Battering Ram,” which literally summons a giant ram to smash into objects or enemies. As The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 continues, more of Taryon’s abilities will undoubtedly be revealed beyond his gemstones and mechanical ally, Doty.
