Apple TV is all set to further level up its sci-fi game with its upcoming adaptation of one of the most seminal works in the cyberpunk subgenre, Neuromancer. The streaming service has not only dropped new key art for the upcoming series but has also released an enthralling teaser trailer. A closer look at the two new revelations makes the Neuromancer adaptation reminiscent of both The Matrix and Blade Runner.
Although quite a few literary works in the sci-fi genre helped shape cyberpunk’s distinct identity, William Gibson is credited for laying much of its groundwork through Neuromancer. Surprisingly, despite being incredibly influential, Neuromancer never reached the screens. Many of its adaptations have been planned in the past, but none have fully materialized.
Fortunately, this is finally changing.
With Apple TV’s Neuromancer, the William Gibson novel now has the potential to join the ranks among other iconic cyberpunk adaptations like Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, and Altered Carbon. Considering its source material’s influence, it should not be surprising that many hit franchises like The Matrix have heavily drawn from it.
After all these years, it is fascinating that Neuromancer‘s TV adaptation now echoes the cyberpunk movies and shows its novel once inspired.
Neuromancer’s New Key Art Reminds One Of The Matrix’s Headjack
William Gibson’s Neuromancer was among the first works in sci-fi to popularize the idea of “jacking in.” The concept of connecting the human brain directly to cyberspace through a neural interface is a well-known sci-fi trope today. However, in 1984, when Neuromancer was first published, its portrayal of “jacking in” was incredibly distinct and novel.
Owing to this, it should not be surprising that the Neuromancer show’s key art depicts its main character, Chase (Callum Turner), jacking in a through a neural implant behind his ear.
Viewers who are less familiar with the William Gibson novel and associate the cyberpunk subgenre with The Matrix will notice how the neural jack has a striking resemblance with Neo’s headjack in the movies. Neo’s headjack in The Matrix is located behind his skull, allowing humans like him to plug into the titular simulated reality.
Mercs and netrunners in Cyberpunk 2077‘s Night City also pull out similar cables to “jack in” directly to computer terminals, weapons, vehicles, and chipsets.
Neuromancer’s New Trailer Is Reminiscent Of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner
Two years before William Gibson’s Neuromancer was published, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner landed in movie theaters in 1982. As a fascinating piece of sci-fi trivia reveals, William Gibson was afraid of watching the Ridley Scott movie because he feared it “would be better than what” he himself could have imagined (via Gizmodo).
Gibson not only feared he would be seen as a copycat but also later clarified that Blade Runner was not a conscious influence on his novel. When Gibson eventually met Scott a few years later, the two discovered they were both inspired by Moebius’s work in the Métal Hurlant comics.
Considering how both Neuromancer and Blade Runner have collectively shaped cyberpunk and drawn ideas from similar material, it makes sense that the upcoming Apple TV sci-fi show almost seems derivative of Blade Runner.

Interestingly, Apple TV’s Neuromancer premieres almost two months after Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099. From a visual standpoint, Neuromancer‘s trailer arguably looks better than Blade Runner 2099. It seems to have the raw and gritty aesthetic that defines classic cyberpunk stories and their themes surrounding late stage capitalism, technological excess, and transhumanism.
Overall, though, both shows look incredibly promising, and it would be fascinating to see how, even after four decades, the two franchises would be compared.
The Matrix & Other Cyberpunk Franchises Owe A Lot To William Gibson’s Neuromancer
Apple TV’s Neuromancer is already being compared to The Matrix and is also being labeled as a rip-off of the Wachowskis’ movies. While it is understandable where these comparisons come from, they seem a little too unfair.
Neuromancer‘s screen adaptation has come a little too late. Owing to this, viewers will be familiar with many of its tropes and story beats because they have been overused in the last four decades. However, this does not diminish the fact that William Gibson’s novel introduced many of these ideas long before they became staples of mainstream science fiction.
The upcoming Neuromancer adaptation might have a hard time convincing audiences that the story they perceive as derivative helped lay the foundation for the very franchises they are comparing it to.
Like The Matrix and Blade Runner, though, Apple TV‘s Neuromancer can also capture the zeitgeist by showing how its source material has aged incredibly well and almost feels prophetic with its predictions surrounding AI, corporate dominance, and humanity’s growing obsession with “black mirrors.“
