Elliot Stabler’s return in Law & Order: SVU continues to hang in the balance.
On the heels of Law & Order: Organized Crime‘s cancellation towards the end of the 2025-2026 cycle, questions about the actor coming back to his original franchise show have been a favorite topic of conversation among fans. His own spinoff ran for five years and considering where the show wrapped, it could have continued, either on NBC or Peacock, where it moved for its final year. Unfortunately, the offshoot was deemed to be underperforming, resulting in its cancellation.
Years after Meloni left Law & Order: SVU due to pay dispute, Meloni returned to the famed franchise, not to reclaim his old job at the Manhattan SVU office, but via his own team, which operated separate from Olivia Benson’s. In Law & Order: Organized Crime, he led a team of law enforcement officers tackling mobs and syndicates, but also with an increased focus on his and his family’s personal stories. With that done, Stabler’s on-screen fate is uncertain, with campaigns to simply see him back with Special Victims.
Speaking with Collider about his latest project, Chop Cheese, a short film that’s directed by his daughter, Sophia Meloni, and starring Luca Rickman and Mark Lake, the actor was asked about Stabler’s future. Unfortunately, despite the clear interest from him, Mariska Hargitay, and the fans, he admitted that the decision wasn’t up to him. “It’s an unanswerable question. I don’t make those decisions,” was his short but clear answer.
Throughout Law & Order: Organized Crime‘s time on the air, Stabler and Benson grew closer than ever. While crossovers with Law & Order: SVU were rare, the characters usually appeared in each other’s shows, which was part of an effort to develop their budding romance — something that fans have been clamoring for years. Unfortunately, Dick Wolf‘s iconic franchise has yet to deliver on that promised payoff for the characters.
Obviously, there is interest in seeing Meloni continue his story as Stabler in his professional life. However, arguably his most compelling narrative now has something to do with his relationship with Benson. At this point, nothing is really stopping Eilliot and Steve from being together except for the creative will of the people behind the shows. Even Meloni and Hargitay are both all for bringing their characters together.
NBC Officially Issues Death Sentence To 36-Year-Old Series With Over 540 Episodes
The latest official announcement from NBC effectively gives a 36-year-old legacy series with over 540 episodes under its belt a death sentence.
Admittedly, the bait-and-switch tactic that has been a major part of their romance has become increasingly frustrating over the last few years. Given their ages and everything they have gone through, getting together is already long overdue. Paying off that storyline is enough reason to bring back Stabler in Law & Order: SVU.
