Superman‘s new DC appearance features multiple characters from the comics, and one of those DC players is Black Canary, who wears a fitting costume for her fun cameo. Right now is not the best time for DC. The reason for that is simple, as the DCU Chapter One has just seen its second movie, Supergirl, earn box office bomb status in its debut.
Supergirl‘s negative box office is a blow to James Gunn’s plans at DC Studios, but it does not alter the course of the franchise, as revealed by DC co-CEO Peter Safran. After the Supergirl movie’s ending, Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El will next be seen in 2027’s Man of Tomorrow. The movie is the sequel to Gunn’s Superman, with David Corenswet returning as the Man of Steel.
Besides Superman and Supergirl, plenty of other DCU heroes will appear in Man of Tomorrow. Characters like the Green Lantern John Stewart and Hawkgirl are set to show up in the film. Before that happens, DC fans can get immersed in another shared universe’s Superman release with several heroes and villains from the comics, as it is already out.
My Adventures with Superman season 3 is airing weekly on Adult Swim and HBO Max, with the first three episodes of the DC animated series’ new season out thus far. In its latest episode, Superboy entered the fold. However, the DC hero was not the only one to show up, as Black Canary makes a small appearance in My Adventures with Superman season 3.
DC Has Revealed What My Adventures With Superman Season 3’s Black Canary Looks Like
In My Adventures with Superman season 3, episode 3, “All’s Fair in Love and W.O.R.M.S.,” Lois Lane reveals that Black Canary is one of her favorites, having listened to her songs since she was a kid. This would put the DC animated universe’s version of the Justice League hero at a different age than Superman, considering that Jack Quaid’s Clark Kent is around the same age as Lois. Differently from other DC heroes and villains, like Superboy, Supergirl, Giganta, and more, Black Canary does not exactly show up physically in the new episode.
That said, we know mostly what she looks like. As Lois and Supergirl break into a musical number, a Black Canary poster can be quickly seen behind the intrepid reporter (via @BlackCanaryBRA/Twitter). The Justice League hero dons a black leather jacket with what appears to be a dark grey bodysuit, black fingerless gloves, and boots. Like in the comics, Black Canary has blonde hair, though only half of her face is visible, as her eyes are missing from the shot. Given how this was just a quick scene, Black Canary’s design did not need to be fully realized.
How My Adventures With Superman Season 3’s Black Canary Compares To Other Versions Of The DC Hero?
There have been several Black Canary adaptations over the years, both in animation and live-action. Looking at the Arrowverse’s Black Canaries, I can’t exactly see a match for the DC hero’s My Adventures with Superman season 3 design. Three actresses played different versions of Black Canary in the Arrowverse, including Katie Cassidy’s Laurel Lance, Caity Lotz’s Sara Lance, and Juliana Harkavy’s Dinah Drake. However, most of the time, they were wearing full leather bodysuits. The animated version of Black Canary is also maskless, as she is only a singer as far as Lois knows it, at least for now.
My Adventures With Superman Season 3 Review: Superboy’s Debut Completely Changes Everything
My Adventures with Superman season 3 adapts some of DC Comics’ best arcs, with Superboy’s debut, Cyborg Superman, and more changing everything.
Compared to Black Canary’s most famous suits in DC Comics, the animated take on the character lacks an iconic element: the fishnets. With the upcoming My Adventures with Green Lantern, DC is slowly building a new shared animated universe on TV. As such, Black Canary’s cameo in My Adventures with Superman season 3 could end up serving as a soft launch to her role in the franchise, and if she ends up fully appearing as a DC hero, her design could be updated to be more action-forward.
