The DC Universe has revealed its own version of the Spider-Verse franchise, and fans could not be more excited. Chapter One of the DC Universe got officially underway with 2025’s Superman, with the franchise slowly being built around that. From more theatrical features like 2026’s Supergirl and Clayface to animated stories like Creature Commandos and Dynamic Duo, DC Studios is fulfilling the promise of James Gunn that the DCU would be stretched over several storytelling formats.
As it turns out, upcoming DC movies and shows will continue to do the same. At 2026’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, DC Studios’ co-chief, Peter Safran, proved as much. Safran announced a new step forward for the DCU’s Batman, though not how many might have expected. Rather than talking about the live-action version set to appear in the universe of Superman, it was unveiled that an animated adaptation of the Absolute Batman comic book series was in production.
The Absolute Batman comic run was written by Scott Snyder, who has been confirmed as the TV series’s showrunner and executive producer. Alongside him is Nick Dragotta, the primary artist of the comic book series, who will also serve as a producer. Based on what is known about the Absolute Batman comic book run and the confirmation of a 3D animated art style, this show could be the DC Universe’s equivalent to Marvel’s immensely successful Spider-Verse franchise.
DC’s Absolute Batman Animated Series Is A Fan’s Dream Come True
Although a lot of other details about Absolute Batman remain under wraps, one thing is for sure: it is a fan’s dream come true. Snyder’s work on the original series essentially reinvented Batman in ways no one thought possible, while still keeping a lot of the hero’s core characteristics intact. Therefore, Snyder spearheading the animated adaptation is all the confirmation fans need that it will be faithful to the story that has been so impactful in the 21st century.
Absolute Batman is widely considered to be one of the best things to happen to the character in a long time. It provides a fresh and unique take on the Dark Knight after decades of very similar adaptations and, due to its immense success, launched an entire spin-off universe, the Absolute Universe. Absolute Batman accounts for a large majority of a lot of the sales in this spin-off series, typifying just how good the series is in the eyes of DC and Batman fans.
Batman’s Most Popular Story In The 21st Century Is Officially Becoming A DC TV Series
DC Studios is officially developing a new Batman TV series, based on one of the most well-received versions of the Dark Knight in the comics.
If Snyder and Dragotta can take everything that worked about the comic series and translate that to the Absolute Batman TV show, every DC fan should be truly excited. Although the 3D animation style is already causing some controversy, it could end up in the style of the aforementioned Spider-Verse franchise, or something like Netflix’s Arcane. This would perfectly fit the exaggerated darkness of Absolute Batman and allow for animated action unlike anything DC has ever seen. Truly, Absolute Batman is a DC fan’s dream, especially if the creators can pull off the adaptation and recapture lightning in a bottle.
Absolute Batman Can Finally Give Batman: The Animated Series A Worthy Opponent
Batman is no stranger to animated TV shows, but no project has ever been able to live up to Batman: The Animated Series. The 90s cartoon proved what could be possible with superheroes in animated format, even leading voice actors like the late Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill to be considered staples of the Batman franchise. Despite many attempts to outdo Batman: The Animated Series, DC has constantly failed. Now, though, Absolute Batman could finally be a worthy opponent.
Of course, it will be hard to compete with Batman: The Animated Series‘ blend of quality TV writing, legacy, and nostalgia. Still, the ways in which Absolute Batman reinvented the character will allow for a completely unique story that has not been seen before concerning the Caped Crusader in animated form. If all of these exciting new elements of Batman are translated effectively, DC Studios may finally have found the show to compete with Batman: The Animated Series after all these years.
