It has been three years since the launch of the latest mainline Final Fantasy entry, Final Fantasy XVI. Marking the 16th main installment in the franchise, FFXVI follows the story of Clive Rosfield who, after watching his kingdom be destroyed, becomes engulfed in the ongoing war between Valisthea’s nations, as well as uncovering the hidden power that is secretly driving the unrest.
Despite meeting praise, a gamer’s patience is hardly known for its longevity and now, fans are eager to hear if the Final Fantasy franchise will continue with a potential Final Fantasy XVI sequel. At the time of writing, Final Fantasy 17 has not yet been confirmed by Square Enix, but plenty of rumors suggest that it is currently in development.
Perhaps most exciting is, in recent days, following the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest that took place earlier this week, the MMORPG’s lead, Naoki ‘Yoshi-P’ Yoshida, shared some news on a potential Final Fantasy 17.
During the moment in question, both Yoshi-P and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi were answering fan’s questions about the Final Fantasy franchise in general. As you can imagine, it was not long before one asked about the future, and more specifically, the potential Final Fantasy 17.
It was here that Yoshi-P revealed that many fans had told him that they want Hamaguchi to work on Final Fantasy 17. “But there were comments along the lines of ‘I want this guy [Hamaguchi] to make Final Fantasy 17,'” he shared. “So I think that’s probably the highest praise you can get,” he continues, turning to Hamaguchi. Once noticing his friend’s discomfort, he added, “You don’t have to respond.”
However, it is perhaps Hamaguchi’s reaction that speaks volumes. After asking, “my response?”, Yoshi-P expresses that he does not need to answer, and the subject is soon changed. Of course, this is not an official confirmation in any sense, but Hamaguchi’s discomfort and the pair soon moving on could mean that Final Fantasy 17 is on the way.
With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth being such a success, it is no wonder that fans would be overjoyed to have Hamaguchi return to potentially develop Final Fantasy 17. However, at the time of writing, this is mere speculation.
