Final Fantasy has one of the best pedigrees in gaming. If you were to ask someone what their favorite Final Fantasy game is, many would say FF7, for instance. And they’d be so into it that they’d be able to describe intimate details about the game, as well as the extended lore and spinoffs. That’s how big the franchise can get when it comes to the most successful entries.
Final Fantasy 6 is one of those monumental games. It managed to usher in a whole new generation of fans to the series thanks to its sweeping story and memorable characters, and now, it’s back.
Over on Reddit, fans are discussing the recent return of Final Fantasy 6, and how on the mark it is. It even goes the extra mile with references and homages.
After weeks of teasing, Kefka’s Ultimate boss fight is now live in Final Fantasy 14, and people are really taking to it. Not only is it a great take on one of the most memorable baddies in Final Fantasy history, but it’s also incredibly challenging and surprising, much like Kefka himself.
As user HexenVexen puts it: “Right at the start of the fight, Kefka uses 14’s auto-translate feature to troll us, saying “This is my first time, so please take it easy!” It didn’t take groups too long to reach phase 2 with God Kefka, but the mechanic Forsaken has caused groups a lot of trouble. It took around 11 hours after release for the first group to finish phase 2. But… they seemed to have failed a hidden puzzle, and Kefka got bored with the fight. He ended the encounter with a fake completion message, gave them an empty treasure chest, and forced them to quit out of the fight and start over.”
For reference, Ultimate raids are the absolute pinnacle of difficulty in Final Fantasy 14, going beyond Savage raids, and forcing dedicated static groups to learn the fight meticulously. This even extends to when the fight is “solved,” as you’ll still need to execute the dance of the battle alongside your group.
More people than HexenVexen are loving it, too: “A lot of FF fans fail to see that FF14 is a love letter to the entire FF franchise and this fight is proof of that. They are so quick to dismiss it just because it’s an MMO.” “This is somehow my biggest motivation to start FF14 now,” another fan writes.
Of course, since it’s an Extreme raid, not everyone is going to be able to play it, as this user points out: “God I so wish I could play this solo (and I know there’s a lot that lets you do 80% solo but I need that to be 100% to be able to play) because I keep hearing how much great stuff is in it! And I did try for a bit, got through Realm Reborn but after finishing that 24 person thing that was required I just knew I couldn’t play further at all until they found a way to make it possible to completely solo.”
You don’t need to go to literal Extreme lengths to encounter a form of Kefka in Final Fantasy 14. There is a normal and Savage level boss fight in a Stormblood expansion’s endgame raid series, which you can still play now. Having finished it with a group at launch, it was an absolute blast, and a great way to reintroduce the classic character.
If you can get a group together in Final Fantasy 14, though, it’s worth it to dive in and see what all the fuss is about. Not everyone will make it to some of the cooler phases in the Extreme bout, but even the opening moments are impressive.
