Fox’s Canceled 100% RT 1-Season Comedy Was On The Wrong Network

There are more ways than ever to watch television, but that also means finding the right home for a series has never been more complicated. Fox was the perfect launchpad for edgy comedies like The Simpsons and Family Guy, but the same network likely wouldn’t have been the ideal home for a warm, emotionally driven show like Ted Lasso.

Fox’s best TV shows include many broad, irreverent, slightly subversive comedies, especially animated ones. In the ’80s, Married… with Children was the anti-Full House, replacing wholesome family lessons with crude jokes, marital bickering, and unapologetically dysfunctional characters. In the 2000s, Malcolm in the Middle was underratedly trailblazing as an intentionally chaotic, fast-paced, single-camera show, unlike anything else on network TV.

New Girl was a huge hit for Fox, quirkier than the average network show while being more optimistic and emotionally sincere than the network’s signature brand. Perhaps that is why in 2022, Fox premiered Pivoting, a heartfelt dramedy about three middle-aged women who find a new lease on life after the sudden death of their fourth friend.

Pivoting became a classic example of the disconnect between critical acclaim and business reality on broadcast television. Its freshman season debuted with a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it was canceled after just 10 episodes.

Pivoting Didn’t Fit Fox’s Brand Of Comedy

Fox greenlit Pivoting as it looked to rebuild its live-action comedy slate in the early 2020s. While the network remained synonymous with animated hits like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Bob’s Burgers, it was searching for another breakout live-action success after Last Man Standing ended.

The ingredients appeared promising. Pivoting came from creator Liz Astrof, a veteran sitcom writer and producer whose credits include The King of Queens, 2 Broke Girls, and The Conners. The show paired comedy veteran Eliza Coupe with Once Upon a Time star Ginnifer Goodwin and Maggie Q, best known for dramatic roles in Nikita and Designated Survivor.

Together, they played three longtime friends inspired to reassess their lives after the unexpected death of a fourth member of their group. Rather than relying on broad punchlines or outrageous situations, the series found humor in grief, middle age, and personal reinvention.

That tonal approach made Pivoting stand out, but it also made it an awkward fit for Fox. The network’s biggest comedy successes have typically been fast-paced, irreverent, or deliberately offbeat. TV shows like Pivoting, including Dead to Me, Cougar Town, and Parenthood, prioritized emotional authenticity alongside their comedy.

Pivoting‘s low ratings ultimately proved fatal, despite glowing reviews from critics. TV history is full of sitcoms that grew stronger after their first season, with New Girl among the best examples. Instead of giving Pivoting room to build an audience, Fox pulled the plug before it had the chance — a fate that might have been avoided on a different platform.

Pivoting Would Have Been Perfect For Streaming

Pivoting was probably better suited to streaming than network television. Its blend of comedy and drama was built around ongoing character growth rather than self-contained sitcom plots, making it a better fit for binge-watching than weekly broadcast television.

On the other hand, streaming platforms don’t need every series to appeal to everyone. They can micro-target a specific demographic while still reaching millions of viewers worldwide, allowing niche shows to find sizable international audiences.

Streaming audiences have embraced female-driven TV dramedies centered on friendship, grief, and reinvention, with series like Firefly Lane and The Five-Star Weekend proving there is a strong appetite for that type of storytelling. Pivoting felt much closer to the kinds of dramedies that thrive on streaming than to the broad, joke-driven comedies that have traditionally defined Fox’s lineup.

Instead, the series landed in an awkward middle ground: too nuanced and serialized for many broadcast viewers, too tied to the weekly network model to benefit from binge discovery, and not broad enough to generate the live ratings Fox needed. That disconnect sealed the show’s fate.

Rather than reflecting the series’ quality, its short lifespan highlighted the growing gap between critical acclaim and commercial success on broadcast television. Had Pivoting premiered on a streaming platform instead, it might have had the time to build word of mouth and find the audience it deserved.
