Grand Theft Auto 6 has been in development for quite a while now, but support for it and its highly anticipated online offering is sure to go on for at least another decade. Even assuming that a hypothetical Grand Theft Auto 7 could be roughly a decade and a half away, it will be a godsend for Grand Theft Auto 6 to eventually launch on PC and feature a standalone multiplayer component, whether the current Grand Theft Auto Online game is assimilated into it or a brand-new one is presented.
Thankfully, the Grand Theft Auto 5 companion Grand Theft Auto Online has been a balm for fans who have been waiting patiently for the sixth mainline installment to release later this year. With Grand Theft Auto fans being incredibly astute and observant about the games’ subtlest alterations or details, there is reason to believe that the brickwork for Grand Theft Auto 6 is already being laid out in front of us.
As noticed by Reddit user tentandonaoserbanido, the quality of car models in Grand Theft Auto Online has improved drastically in the last handful of years, which consequently has them doubly excited for Grand Theft Auto 6. In general, it appears as if many fans, such as user guifesta, believe Grand Theft Auto Online is the perfect template or foundation for how they would like to see vehicle customization in Grand Theft Auto 6 take shape.
User CoDog74’s guess is that “the recent GTA 5 DLC cars were back ported from GTA 6 especially some of the police cars.” Meanwhile, zero_sevenn makes a point of noting how Grand Theft Auto Online can only achieve so much graphically, and that the leap made by Grand Theft Auto 6’s level of detail and fidelity will be “10x better.”
It would not be out of the realm of possibility for assets to be shared between Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto 6, especially if Grand Theft Auto 6’s online companion will be baked into the pre-existing Grand Theft Auto Online. It would be alarming for Grand Theft Auto Online as we know it to become completely obsolete.
Grand Theft Auto features, updates, or vehicle models being stored first in Grand Theft Auto Online and backfilled later could let Rockstar and players have their cake and eat it, too (if all of these same features and vehicle models actually do appear in Grand Theft Auto 6, anyway).
Regardless, Grand Theft Auto 6 is hopefully going to be a game with a ton of meat on its bones. It will need to be if it is not launching with a Grand Theft Auto Online component, and that is what many fans are truly looking forward to as an ‘endgame’ of sorts beyond Grand Theft Auto 6’s single-player story campaign.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to be released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026.
