HBO is the home of many shocking thrillers, and this show has one of its darkest storylines and plot twists, deserving a comeback. With the streaming era, certain genres have started to become quite popular, with a few of those including Westerns, sci-fi, and thrillers. The latter has led to some of the biggest shows on streaming services in the last few years.
The reason for that is simple, as the thriller genre lends itself well to the binge format that has been popularized by streamers like Netflix. Some noteworthy psychological thriller series to come out of the streaming boom include You, Presumed Innocent, Mindhunter, The Crowded Room, The Girlfriend, and more. That said, HBO had already beaten the streamers to the genre’s domination.
HBO’s best TV shows come in all forms and sizes, with successful multi-season shows and limited series of the most diverse genres. Among those are many psychological thriller series that keep viewers on the edge of their toes with complex characters, a haunting atmosphere, and shocking twists. A few nice examples of those include Big Little Lies, True Detective, The Outsider, and many more.
Among HBO’s most engaging psychological thriller series is Sharp Objects. The star-studded dark show debuted on July 8, 2018, over eight years ago. It adhered to a limited series format, adapting Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name through an 8-episode season. That said, at the end of the show, there is still a way for it to go on, and the HBO series deserves to come back.
Sharp Objects Tells One Of HBO’s Most Haunting Tales
Sharp Objects is one of HBO’s hardest shows to watch. That is not due to it being bad in any way. Far from it, as Sharp Objects boasts a near-perfect 92% critics’ score and a high 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is a universally beloved psychological series with one of HBO’s best casts, being led by Amy Adams and featuring names like Sydney Sweeney, Patricia Clarkson, Sophia Lillis, Chris Messina, Eliza Scanlen, Henry Czerny, and more. What makes the HBO series so hard to watch is its subject matter, as Sharp Objects is an incredibly heavy show.
The HBO series follows Adams’ Camille Preaker, a reporter suffering from alcoholism and mental health issues, who goes back to her judgmental small town to report on the murders of two young girls. It is at that point that things start to derail, with Camille’s tragic past coming to light and the investigation in the present day taking a turn for the macabre. The HBO series ends with a massive plot twist, as Amma Crellin, Camille’s sister, is revealed as the serial killer, all due to jealousy over how her mother, the toxic Adora, treated her victims.
How Sharp Objects Season 2 Could Work
HBO’s Sharp Objects tackles topics like abuse, self-harm, toxic relationships, dysfunctional families, and more. It is a dark show, with plenty of deaths and sad fates for its characters. While it is true that Sharp Objects‘ ending, with Adora sent to prison and Camille discovering a frightening detail that leads to the conclusion that Amma killed the girls, works as a solid final event, there is still more story left to tell. After all, in the original book, the action does not end in Camille’s discovery.
HBO’s Big Little Lies was also a limited series at first and then came back for a successful season 2.
In Flynn’s novel, Camille turns her sister over to the police, with there being more scenes that depict Amma’s arrest, trial, and a meeting with Camille in a juvenile detention facility. As such, HBO’s Sharp Objects season 2 could adapt the fallout from the major season 1 ending, continuing from the iconic “Don’t tell mama” line and exploring how Camille deals with what her sister did and having to be the one to hand her over to the police, which would surely affect her psyche even further. Sharp Objects is one of HBO’s best thriller series, and season 2 could be another hit.
