!!!WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR HOUSE OF THE DRAGON!!!House of the Dragon‘s Season 3 finale has ignited a wave of fresh debate among longtime A Song of Ice and Fire fans, with reactions being quite polarized overall. On the one side, some fans praise the episode for actually feeling like a finale as opposed to what we got in Season 2, while fans on the other end of the spectrum are lambasting the episode for its dramatic changes from the source material.
The finale sparked further backlash among some viewers who interpreted the “butterfly scene” to be a direct slight against George R.R. Martin himself, pointing out that it may have been referencing Martin’s infamous (now removed) “Beware the Butterflies” blog post from 2024. Whether or not there is any connection between the HOTD scene and Martin’s blog remains unconfirmed, but one thing is clear, the most recent season has people talking, for better or worse.
While there’s still one more House of the Dragon season to look ahead to, fans are in for a bit of a wait, but fortunately, Assault on Rook’s Rest is an upcoming release that arrives August 20 and will give viewers a small reprieve in the interim (via GoTL).
The Assault on Rook’s Rest Quest is an exciting upcoming special event for Game of Thrones: Legends that will bring back one of House of the Dragon‘s most tragic encounters adapted from the Fire & Blood novels. The event will run from August 20 at 4:00AM to August 24 at 2:00AM EST, with the Assault on Rook’s Rest Summon also becoming available slightly before and after the event times.
The summon for this event includes Legendary Champions Oberyn Martell, Aegon II’s recently revived Sunfyre, Tywin Lannister, and the infamous Gregor Clegane, aka the Mountain.
The Battle at Rook’s Rest is easily one of the most iconic moments in both the Fire & Blood novels and HBO’s House of the Dragon series, with Criston Cole’s Green army attacking the castle to lure out one of Rhaenyra’s dragons. As you’ll remember, Rhaenys arrives on Meleys and is confronted by Aegon on Sunfyre and Aemond on Vhagar.
In Fire & Blood, the brothers attack together, and the three dragons collide, killing Rhaenys and gravely wounding Aegon, while in House of the Dragon, Aegon arrives somewhat unexpectedly, and Aemond blasts him out of the sky before Vhagar ultimately kills Meleys and Rhaenys.
Assault on Rook’s Rest is one of several rotating events that occur throughout the year, placing you on the Green side, interestingly enough. You join Criston Cole, Vhagar, and the Green army in their trap. It’s one of many playable PvE quest events themed around major battles/storylines from Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon.
Generally, you fight through Normal, Hard, Treacherous, and Kingslayer difficulties, earn a score for each battle, compete on a leaderboard, and collect event-specific summon tokens and other rewards, and you can officially relive the epic face-off at Rook’s Rest in Game of Thrones: Legends later this month.
