Ted Lasso season 4 just started a week ago, but Apple TV is already looking ahead to a possible fifth season.
After three seasons, the hit Emmy-winning series seemingly came to an end. Not only did co-creator Jason Sudeikis finish the story he had envisioned from the beginning, but the season 3 finale felt like a proper conclusion while leaving certain elements open-ended. The team eventually came back together for another season that takes Ted in a familiar but new direction.
Now that season 4 has gotten underway, there’s a lot of speculation about whether this is the start of a new trilogy of seasons focused on AFC Richmond’s women’s soccer team. In a red carpet interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, Eddy Cue, who oversees Apple TV in his role as senior vice president of services at Apple, teased that Ted Lasso season 5 seems likely at this point.
The executive believes that the current season is “good enough” to warrant a renewal. “I think there’s plenty of stories to go on,” he explained, adding, “We’ll show up. No worries.” As of this writing, Apple has yet to announce a season 5 renewal.
“I hope so. It’s certainly good enough for that. So I think there’s plenty of stories to go on. We’ll show up. No worries.”
This new update by Cue aligns with recent comments Sudeikis made about returning to the Ted Lasso writers’ room later on this summer to figure out storylines for a possible season 5. In fact, the co-creator and star appears to have a new trilogy in mind for this next phase of Ted Lasso. As long as viewers are willing to watch, then he just might get the chance to complete another three-season story arc.
The first three seasons of Ted Lasso centered on the titular American football coach as he took over coaching duties for a British soccer team. The move was all part of a ruse by owner Rebecca Welton to stick it to her ex-husband by trying to make the team fail. The plan backfired, though, when Ted’s vision for the team led to exceptional results.
Every season of Ted Lasso has earned positive reviews from critics, with season 2 earning the best reception with a nearly perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 98%. The new season currently holds an 89%.
Aside from being a critical darling, Ted Lasso has won several awards over the years, including the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, the Golden Globe for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy (Sudeikis) and a Peabody.
Aside from Sudeikis, other returning cast members on Ted Lasso include Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Jeremy Swift, Brett Goldstein and Brendan Hunt. Tanya Reynolds, Abbie Hern, Faye Marsay, Jude Mack, Rex Hayes and Aisling Sharkey are among the new cast members this season.
Reviews have been positive so far for Ted Lasso season 4, so if viewership numbers follow suit, then Cue’s hope for a fifth season is likely to come to fruition.
