When it comes to the many superhero roles that Hollywood has brought to life from the comics, Hugh Jackman is one of the actors with a very rare record.
Even though many DC and Marvel icons get recast, the Australian actor has played Logan for more than two decades since the original X-Men movies. However, as the mutants are getting ready to be rebooted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, many are wondering who will replace Jackman down the line.
In an interview with Barstool Sports, Jackman was asked about the prospects of Wolverine eventually being played by a new actor. The long-time X-Men star stated, “I’m 57. I’m doing it till I’m 90. So, you know, I’ll do a little time capsule for them. I’m not going to say anything to whoever plays him, ’cause no one said anything to me, which I really am thrilled about. And I had not read the comics, so I was just coming to it fresh. And I learned a lot over the years. Of course, I’ve got my own take, but it must be melding in with me in some way. I hope someone just comes in and does whatever the f*** they want and makes it their own.”
While he was initially done playing the Marvel legend after 2017’s Logan, Jackman got to play several variants in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which became one of the biggest box office hits for The Multiverse Saga. Even though he hasn’t been back since 2024, there have been many rumors that he is reprising the role later this year.
Even though Disney and Marvel Studios have yet to confirm or deny it, Wolverine is rumored to be part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, which is one of the remaining Phase 6 installments. However, Jackman has played it coy in numerous interviews about whether or not he is showing up in the massive team-up film.
If he is actually in the movie at all, it’s likely going to be one of the many MCU surprises for audience members that Marvel Studios is trying to keep under wraps. Given the massive multiverse arc at hand, it would only make sense for Wolverine to be in Avengers: Doomsday.
In terms of who will take over for Jackman as Wolverine in the future, the X-Men movie reboot is in the works, but it has yet to be revealed if Logan will even be part of the line-up. It’s not impossible that he may not even be one of the featured characters, as there are many other mutants that could be getting the spotlight.
The MCU’s iteration of the popular superhero group is expected to follow a younger cast, especially as Marvel Studios is looking to do the X-Men differently from the Fox-Marvel era. However, even if the new Wolverine is in the first film, there is no reason he couldn’t show up in future installments.
The next installment in the MCU will be Spider-Man: Brand New Day, featuring Tom Holland back as Peter Parker on July 31.
