Invincible – Superhero Roleplaying is a superhero tabletop roleplaying game based on the comic books, which were in turn adapted into an immensely popular Amazon Prime series. If you’re reading this, odds are you know all about Invincible already. If you’ve ever wondered what it’d be like to play as Atom Eve, Monster Girl, or Rex Splode, this is your chance. You can even play as Invincible himself as you fight bad guys around the city.
Based on the comic book of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, this official Invincible RPG uses Free League’s Year Zero Engine. This ruleset offers a more streamlined approach to role-playing and combat, creating fast-paced and action-packed sequences at the table. While the included stories take place in the world of Invincible, these can be used for a Gamemaster’s own superhero adventure as well.
Invincible RPG Starter Set Is An Ideal Way To Play
As part of the Invincible – Superhero Roleplaying releases, there’s a Starter Set. This is an ideal way to begin playing the RPG, especially if you’re new to the Year Zero ruleset, which has been used in other Free League RPGs like The One Ring and Alien. The box includes everything you need to get started, along with pre-generated character sheets and a three-part adventure, which does a great job of easing you into the game.
Here’s everything included in the Invincible RPG Starter Set:
- 3-act introductory adventure called “Metro Mayhem”
- 6 pre-generated characters with pre-filled character sheets
- 1 large double-sided action map with one side depicting two key adventure locations and the other a wide city downtown area
- Illustrated cardboard action tokens and standees for heroes and their adversaries
- A deck of custom cards for drawing the initiative and to provide cues for social scenes
- 10 engraved custom 6-sided dice designed specifically for this TTRPG
I started off by trying out the Starter Set, and was quickly impressed by how well the world of the comics have been translated into this format. The series’ dark sense of humor, brutal action, and gore are all found in the Invincible – Superhero Roleplaying game, as are its heart and drama. GMs and players can tone things down if they’d like, of course, but this is still a pretty unforgiving TTRPG. It’s not nearly the meat grinder that Mork Borg is, but also don’t expect to breeze through conflicts as easily as you might in D&D.
Overall, I found the Starter Set to be a really engaging and fun introduction to Invincible – Superhero Roleplaying. Even with being quite familiar with the Year Zero Engine and Free League’s other RPGs already, this was still an enjoyable way to start the game. The items included have a premium quality to them that should also appeal to Invincible fans in general.
Invincible RPG Core Rulebook Takes Your Game Further
Of course, there’s also a Core Rulebook to expand your superhero adventures even further. This is what you’ll need if you want to create your own superhero from scratch, although the book also includes some streamlined character creation thanks to pre-made archetypes. You’ll have access to almost 70 superpowers to choose from, and this includes boosts, drawbacks, and talents that will make your character feel unique.
You’ll also find more extensive rules on the RPG’s combat systems, a deep dive into the world of Invincible‘s locations and world, and GM tools to help you make your own campaigns. The Core Rulebook for Invincible – Superhero Roleplaying also includes stats and descriptions for over 60 characters, allowing you to populate your campaigns with various familiar faces from Invincible‘s universe.
Crisis Mode Lets You Play The Invincible RPG Solo
Don’t have anyone to play with? That’s no problem thanks to Crisis Mode, which lets you play Invincible – Superhero Roleplaying all on your own. This is a shift we’ve seen in various TTRPGs, including multiple from Free Leage, and it’s really awesome to see its inclusion here. While I still prefer to play TTRPGs with a group, I found Crisis Mode to still be engaging and enjoyable.
I’ll admit, superhero RPGs don’t normally appeal to me, so I was a bit cautious entering into this, but I was quickly swayed by how great the combat is here. If you’re tired of plodding combat that can take hours for a single confrontation, or if you’re just looking for simplified rules, the fast-paced action in Invincible – Superhero Roleplaying is a godsend. Whether you’re a fan of the comics or the show, this is a great way to experience the Invincible universe in a new way.
