The following contains spoilers for House of the Dragon season 3’s finale.
The shocking death of a major character in House of the Dragon season 3’s finale reveals Rhaenyra’s true colors.
Westeros has a long history of leaders sacrificing their morals for power, and Rhaenyra proves to be no different in House of the Dragon season 3’s finale. In the last episode of the most recent chapter of the Game of Thrones prequel series, Helaena, who was pregnant, took her own life after Rhaenyra kept her isolated as her own prisoner of war.
In an interview with TV Line, Emma D’Arcy, who plays the queen, explains how Helaena’s death marks a major turning point for her character, as Helaena represents one of the few figures who has remained good. By the time of her death, Rhaenyra has already become very ruthless in her pursuit of the Iron Throne. D’Arcy states the loss reveals to the public that she is nothing like her father, who was seen as a relatively peaceful ruler, and that there is no way for her to backtrack now.
After once attempting to follow the more restrained footsteps of her father, King Viserys, that facade has clearly vanished after the tragic loss. Helaena’s death can be seen as one last act of rebellion, and she chose to die by suicide rather than allow herself and her unborn child to become victims of Rhaenyra’s heartless nature.
The final episode of House of the Dragon season 3 concludes with Rhaenyra standing beside the window from which Helaena fell. Instead of showing any signs of grief or remorse, she simply shuts the window, as if it never happened, showing how much she has changed and how different she is from her father.
